"evolution of an image"

If I have been there before or done a lot of research on the location my shots are visualized. If not I try to arrive early and scout the location before prime light.

I have learned though that I need to plan better in terms of not only seasons and weather conditions but also the angle paths of the sun and moon. A few degrees angle or phase of the moon can make a significant difference the lighting of the scene.

If you don't already have this, here's the perfect app for that type of planning: http://photoephemeris.com

For me it's a little bit of both. I'm always scouting new locations and when I find something that may work I go through the whole visualization process of imagining it in different light conditions, times of day, seasons, compositions, etc. as well as which equipment would be best to realize my vision. But, there are times when I'm in the right place at the right time just as something epic happens. I love those serendipitous moments more than anything, really.

Interesting article- great images. though definitely not my approach (try as i might to plan and pre visualize)
Besides the broader prep of east/west/wind and weather, I'm definitely an in the moment picture taker- I do take my time framing however, and find it hugely gratifying when I find a picture where I wouldn't expect it at first glance. I dont take a lot of shots since I dont composite multiple exposures, and if I'm happy, i quickly move on/around to try and "find" another interesting frame.
I love being surprised at discovering scenes-and I succumb completely to my visual ADHD. :)
Forcing myself to slow down is something I'll always be working on.
