Kurt, what's your take on ignition ON and let it idle while out of the vehicle, or do you shut it off any chance you can to conserve fuel?

I would like to know this as well. Seemed like a loss of fuel just letting it idle for parts of the trip during the trail cuts etc. Was this needed to power the production equipment's battery chargers etc.?

I was really just thinking in general.

Oftentimes while I'm on the trail we stop to look at a line, enjoy the scenery or just whatever.

I've read that starting an engine uses as much as X amount of time of it idling. Of course that X varies by each vehicle and may only be a matter of seconds anyway. But an engine that is running will probably continue to run, but restarting it over and over adds wear to the starting system- which on new vehicles such as these isn't such a big deal but I imagine Kurt gas "slummed" it in some older vehicles as well.

Kurt, what size and brand tablet did you run in the Tacoma, and what mount?
I am currently looking into tablets for mapping campsites.
Thanks, and I did put up a thread under the GPS section.
Kind of diggin' that NVIDIA one that was posted.

Also watching part III on the TV right now, just finished getting out of the bog.

Wife and I are pumped to watch this! Waited for several parts (all of them?) before we started because we binge watch. We both really enjoyed the Alaska and the Central America trips!

For mosquitos, the best thing I've found is to treat all of your clothes in Permethrin. I was skeptical until I used it on my clothes for our recent trip to Peru. It's awesome! I used 30% DEET wipes on my face, neck, hands and ankles and had 3 mosquito bites on my hands at the end of our 4 day hike. Most others were tore up from the floor up.

...what Mosquito repellant are you using? After a MISERABLE weekend at Assatague Island Md and being eaten alive using 40% Deet we purchased both MAXI-Deet and Jungle Juice (juice in lotion form)

We had a variety of options and I think we all found varying amounts of sucsess with each. Personally I bring Jungle Juice (spray) in the little 4? ounce bottles.

...Did you have any latch failures with the AT habitat?

Nope, latches were fine.

...Why no snorkles?

Nothing available for these model Toyota's just yet.

...I have a similar designed Habitat and I typically will close the upper window (rear hatch on the Tacoma AT..) to keep cooking odors out of the sleeping area...also I will keep it shut when my campsite lights are on to keep mosquitos out of the bedroom..

We quickly found this was a must, we would keep the hatch shut and lights off as much as possible. That said the mosquitoes didn't seem to be too aggressive inside the tent, outside and they were ruthless.

Can I ask what HEMA Map "Layer" worked best while in Canada... There are several within the HEMA App.
For that matter do you have a "Go-To" layer for the US that seems to be best for you guys when out and exploring.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

We were using "Canada Street" and "Canada Topo West"

Thanks for watching!

In hind site we should have been more fuel disciplined early on. It was just deceiving enough. We would drive a quarter mile with the saw guys it front and find all clear trail, just as soon as they loaded up in the trucks we would find another log jam. But given the super slow overall pace even when moving (think 1st gear 4-low) due to the many "gotcha" logs, rocks, etc... I don't think any idle on or off would have made a discernible difference in the overall big picture, i.e. either way we were going to need extra fuel. As a personal rule, I turn it off if I'm going to be parked for more than a minute or two, particularly if the sound of the vehicle and exhaust are going to detract from the reason you're stopping :D

Simply AWESOME! Best one yet - congrats you guys, just amazing stuff.

Any details on the water filtration system used on the trailer? Very interested to learn more.

Thanks again to everyone involved.

Great tip there!

You can learn and gather a lot with an all-stop / all-quiet. Works wonder on nightly patrols and it's amazing what can be determined. Not to mention possible wildlife photo ops.

Finished all three episodes and loved it. Only thing I didnt like was the end of the trail. I know you said it was all cut out and easy going but we missed like 40 or 50 miles of trail. Kinda felt like it was taken from me.

Watched all three episodes this morning. The ability to put up with the damn mosquitos deserve an applause alone. I've been on parts of the trail and the "skitters" can be brutal. Well done gentleman.

Let me do some digging, I can't readily recall the name but we used that system in Central America too. Thanks for watching!
