Expedition Spares and Tool Kit Recommendation

Locked 1994 80 series, 140K, six 285 BGFs, 3" OME lift, 45 gal Frontrunner Aux tank, Wilderness 7' rack, and two driving lights (brand tbd). Other than that, the truck is stock with very few off-road miles.
Accessories include air compressor, Hi Lift Jack, GPS (2), CB, Laptop, tent, etc.

5,000 miles across North Africa, mainly on dirt and sand in 15 days.

Will sell the truck and contents in Bamako Mali upon completion of the rally.

Need to put together a cash of spare parts and tools for the trip.

The tough part is that the spares and tools will have minimal resale value at the end of the road.

So... What should I take? What would you pack?

Thanks, and I look forward to a lively discussion.

Thanks Dude

Anyone else with a "must bring" item? or list they used last time out?

Anything specific to an 80 series?

You may have all ready thought of this... Before I left for a trip like this I would go through the axles & brake system to make sure everything is baselined - this could save you time and money in the long run. Its much more fun and fast on a cement floor in a garage.

The 80 specific:

Factory Service Manual

Code reader

Dist cap

Rotor

Pinion seals (frt & R)

Starter contacts

Safety Seal tire repair kit

Small Tarp (to lay on while repairing)

Assorted bulk hose & clamps

Electrical tester

Small roll #10 wire

Assorted fuse's

8mm 10mm 12mm 14mm 17mm 21mm 22mm (3/8 dr & 1/2 dr) sockets/open end/box wrenches

54mm hubnut socket

I leave a copy of our passports/auto information license, reg. title etc. with a family member, and keep about $200 (10s & 20s) and other copies of all information and passports in the truck in a "secret location." We also include a relatively detailed itinerary with times where we will have the sat phone on to receive calls.

O' and in case you haven't done this type of a trip before....15 days, 5K miles....maybe way over estimating your mileage. I'd not even think I could pull that off in Mexico, where the roads are great and I don't have to hassle with multiple border crossings and other local "issues."

I usually pull in 2500 miles in 10 days, with a couple of "flex" days for repairs or just hanging out for a day in a cool town, where we're just sick of driving....

Maybe Connie & Graham can say whether this type of mileage is possible in Africa?

Ok...just read the original post again....Rally....hmm....add some shocks, springs and steering components?

Glad to see you made it over here from Mud.

I do agree that with a complete baseline of your truck prior to departure, your needed spare parts list can be paired down somewhat. I can't wait to see the pics when you return.

Great info!!!

Just what I was looking for.

People talk about base-lining the truck, quite a bit.

What exactly does this mean? From the general usage of the word, I'm thinking it is checking the condition of every significant part. Is there a more specific definition, or better yet, a systematic approach to this task?

Yeah, 24 great tip about this site!

Thanks guys,

Baselining basically means bringing all the necessary maintenance up to date, so that you KNOW its been done, and addressing any preventative maintenance issues or known problem areas.

So, for example:

Full fluid/filter change. If it's a fluid, change it out; even if the previous owner has a receipt showing that last oil change 1000 miles ago....don't forget the tranfer case, axles, and transmission.

FZJs/HZJs, Birfield repack, check trunion bearings
Wheel bearings, brakes, if even slightly in doubt, replace.

FZJs, Pesky heater hose; telltale signs of #5 head gasket issues...

I would just take my Titanium Black AmEx card and a Sat Phone.

Well I would forget about that in Africa... or even Europe these days! Visa/Mastercard is what you need.
