Hi Wiberg

Our next tour in Romania is scheduled from 2nd to 24th of August. The real trip will start the 4th in north-west Romania and will end the 22nd in western Romania.
You'r right, I'm always trying to associate:
- Real off-road adventures in the wild. We do not only cross a country using tare roads as a lot are doing. In Romania, I would say that 85% of our driving time is on gravel/mud tracks
- immersion in the nature. We will only spend 3 nights in hotel. Other nights will be bivouacs in amazing locations, in the wild.
- contact with the local and authentic rural life (we do not need to spend more time in cities that looks like all cities)
- Visits of some spectacular signs of the rich cultural heritage of Romania. Most of time, we use off-road tracks across vast areas to reach each monastery or preserved village. Most of them are in the backcountry.

The tour is build in a way to have nice pace, a regular mix of discoveries, driving, adventure. I also organize different activities with the locals (very authentic). I also try to have as much diversity as possible in terms of tracks, "challenges", landscapes etc… along the way.

Something specific that I like to organize in my tours, it's to have a cook with us. He will take care of most breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Very fine food when spending days and nights in the wild is fantastic. But what participants like the most is that they don't have to vast their time to shop around during the tour, and they have a lot of free time at the end of the day for relaxing, reading, trekking, photographing or having a beer while reliving the adventures of the day :) The atmosphere around the fire is always fantastic. Even if I personally love to cook myself outdoor, it's a real plus to have someone who do that with a group.
Participants must have their own sleeping equipment (tent, rooftop-tent or in-car bed) as well as chairs, table and personal stuff.
The group is limited to a maximum of 10 cars and 20 persons.

Just let me know if you want to know more, or e-mail me ( explo@geko4x4.com ).

Excellent report and nice videos.
I'm glad that you enjoyed travelling in my country and most of all I'm glad to see people who realize the potential and the value of traditions and culture in Romania. Most people "inform" themselves from TV (bad influence).

Anyways... seems that you two had a very nice trip. The weather is also best in august here.

If you ever visit the southern Carpathians, Oltenia Region, I'll be more than glad to join you as a guide and cook :chef:

Here is a small part of what you can see in my region (a few albums. didn't had time to upload more lately):

Thank you everybody for your feed-backs. I appreciate.
Faulco: funny to read you here. small world. But why do we have to use forums on other continents to exchange ?! :D

Sorry nico missed this one. This is so true, we have our own continent but the best forums are overseas by the looks of it!

Romania 2014

Hi Nico,
I enjoyed your trip report and would like to go to Romania myself. I have been reading Lonelyplanet's travel guide to Romania and done some preliminary planning so far. However, if your guided trip is not priced outrageous I will consider joining you on your trip. I particularly liked your idea of bringing a chef along. I will send you an email. By the way, we will bring our own expedition vehicle with all bells and whistles (roof tent, snorkel, winch and 4x4).
Best regards
Oddvar O from Alta, Norway

Hi guys

@Rainstatebear: thank you for the kind comments. I will post more of our coming trips (iceland, Romania, Algeria) ;)
All the best

I am very happy to be here because this is a very good site that provides lots of information about the topics covered in depth.

Hi Brodyagi

thank you for your nice comment.
Transfagaras. To be honest, it's not the nicest place in Romania. It's a very busy road (in summer) and the roadside is full of litter (sad habit where "civilization" meets nature in Romania… :( )
Ok, the construction of the road is interesting and the mountain sceneries around are nice. But we have a lot of similar roads and even more spectacular in Switzerland… In my opinion, this is a nice transit road when you have to move in the north / south axis. But there are more pleasant trails in the area.
