A little hint of what is coming next

All of the parts came from Japan 4x4. Dave was great to work with and his pricing is fair. I am going to work this weekend on a little restoration work.

that only does rear locking though. I saw one in a hjz77 that had both front and rear positions. Or are you only running one locker?

Yep, just the rear locker. I am going to fit an ARB Air Locker and use the factory switch for activation.

The 2.5L Turbo needs EGT temp monitoring, as getting the little motor too hot can cause the head to crack. We plan to use the factory water temp gauge, but wire/resistor it up to show actual temp.

To monitor EGT, I spent far too much time deciding on the best option, primarily dictated by my obsession with not making my truck look like an autozone catalog. For the most part, aftermarket gauges are hideous and I learned the lesson from my Tacoma not to fill the dash with them (distracting and complex). Almost giving up, I found this small gauge company Auber that makes simple, small gauges that fit in a 1/32 DIN slot, which is the same as all of the switches in my LJ78 (and most older Toyotas). It will display the EGT temp and has a green colored display, which matches the factory dash lighting. It can be dimmed with the dash as well. It also has several alarm functions that can alert the driver that EGT has exceeded a desired level.

I am planning to install the probe pre-turbo and will likely set the alarm at 1000 degrees F. This is an assumption at the moment, as we need to install it and determine what temps are in real world conditions.

It think it is a good choice.

great choice in gauges...
Scott I hope you have this build on Mud as there are lots of guys who would like to know about that gauge.

I had this in mine as well. A bunch of guys over on Mud run it. Simple, easy to wire up, very accurate and the programmable display makes the temp easy to monitor. I had a small CB mic wired to mine for a little bit. When it reached the temp, it would make a squeal to warn me. Did you just get the display or the box as well?

Nice trucks but the horror stories of the heads and engines scared me off.

How ironic that the first thing you had to do on your LX was a head gasket! You can't argue with the price you paid for a double locked 80 though!

That EGT gauge is awesome. Do they make any other gauges in that size?
