Extending the Roof trays on my 02 4Runner

Well heres where I am, I have an 02 4Runner with the stock roof rack. I purchased another stock roof rack with the idea of extending mine within a few inches of the front windshield. The idea being I would have another point to attach a set of cross bars and one more point for the Hannibal rack to attach. I have the Toyota parts I need would just need to drill a few more holes in the roof and insert nut-certs, cut the trays to fit the length I need and done. I'm not certain I'm going to run the rack indefinitely but don't remember a mpg decrease with it on as its only 2" thick and has had all the upper bars cut off, so it's flat. Thoughts? The nut-cert kit with tools is $69-$79.

Nothing to offer except I think it's a good idea. I've considered it. I prefer a low profile rack that covers the length of the roof over a high sided one that just takes up part of it.
In a MPG and looks sort of way.

I know JeffryScott in Tucson put on his own roof rack runners. They were not Toyota brand, but they were almost identical if I remember right. I think you could buy them in all sorts of lengths too.
Wish I had a link for you.

There are a few companies that make longer rack portions and custom lengths but nothing longer than 70,75,79" (one of those). Yakima makes one but since I have the stock rack (off a wrecked runner) i can just cut it down and mate it up. I do have a sunroof and was trying to remember what the heck it looked like under the headliner when I had the headliner out and cleaned it. Though for the life of me I cant remember. A refresher for what my rack looks like.

Why not run the Thule racks with the towers that clamp over the top of the doors? I run Thule towers in the stock location and then the other towers over the top of the doors when I need additional cross bars.

I have all Yakima parts, I also have the bars that connect inside the door frame. I'm not a fan as it detracts from the clean look of the existing roof rack.
