F-150 guys: Fuel tank size and 5.0 V8 questions?

Hey, folks out there with 2012+ F-150 crew-cab short beds, can you confirm your fuel tank size for me? I'm doing some research and I've found a couple of non-official sources (Edmunds and one other) that both say 36 gallons in the F150 Crew Cab Short bed - that's astonishing to me. Really? 36 gallons in the short bed? That almost seems too good to be true.
.
Second question, is the 5.0 the old tried-and-true 302 V8 or is it an all new engine? I know the F-150's used to have the problematic 5.4, when did they go to the 5.0?
.
Thanks in advance. :ylsmoke:

The 36 gallon tank was an option on the short bed. I have a 2012 f150 crewcab with the 36 gallon tank.

The old 302 and the 2011 to current 5.0 are completely different.
I have a 2011 f150 5.0 4x4 extended cab 8’ bed 3.73 axles and can get 19mpg at 70-75mph on the highway. I also have ample power to tow a 6x12 enclosed trailer over anything out west.

I have the 36g tank it gives a pretty good range.

The old 302 was a Windsor, I believe named after the plant where they were manufactured, the new 302 is the Coyote.

Besides the width, the heads are greatly improved, previously a well known choke point on the Windsor motors, particularly on the exhaust side.

Google ought to have a ton of info on the differences.

They are referring to the short bed which is the 6.5’ bed. The super short bed does not come with that tank. I had that same truck. 650 Miles per a tank on the highway

I just sold my 2013 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 with the short 5.5' bed. It had a 36 gallon tank. According to the 2013 brochure I have, 36g was standard on all 4x4 except the regular cab. I can also second Machinebuilder's statement. That truck would do 20mpg at 75mph. Towing a 3000 lb tent trailer, I could pull 14 to 15mpg. It was a great truck, and I absolutely loved it. I only sold it because I want a camper it couldn't carry. It's been a week now, and I still have seller's remorse.

It's replacement, an F350 crew cab, long bed, 4x4, 6.2 gas, can barely hit 14 mpg at 75. Not to mention, it takes 5 city blocks to make a u-turn. Once I get the camper I'll probably forget about the F150. Until I get to a gas station...

My 2016 f150 4x4 has the 36 gal..it is an option and one of the reasons I went with the ford...26 is standard size....

With 34 in tires and level kit I could still run almost 500 miles on a tank running cross country on a trip to Chicago

Alright, so dumb question, I guess, but whatever happened the 5.4? I know the 5.4 was in a lot of Ford trucks from the late 90's up into the 2000's. IIRC there were even a couple of different versions of it, 2 valve and 3 or 4 valve?
.
Reason I'm asking is because when I was shopping for my tow vehicle 2 years ago, I avoided the Expedition because of known issues with the 5.4 engine. Something about blowing sparkplugs or something?

The 5.4 was replaced by the 5.0 in 2011 when Ford revamped it's truck engine line up. Same year they came out with the Eco-Boost. My truck with the 5.0L, 3:73's and Duratracs is currently averaging 12.4 L/100 kms / Approx 20 MPG. Down a little in mileage lately due to winter warm ups. It was doing a little better in the warm months... Also, I have the 5'5" bed and the 36 gallon tank...

But it seems the 5.4 stayed in the Expedition lineup. At least, every ad I see for an Expedition up to about 2015 shows that it has the 5.4, not the 5.0. I had thought the F-150 and Expedition were on the same platform so it seems odd to me that the Expedition would keep the 5.4 while the F-150 got the new 5.0. Was the 5.0 ever in any Expedition?

That's impressive fuel economy and range. Your F150 has triple the range of my Titan.

Cheers
