F800 Large Touratech Tank Build

I went to Touratech and saw their large tank on the 800. Much like the GS1150 in the way you sit by the tank. Bought it...

Just got it back from paint:

I'm going to try the install myself (to what degree is still in question). I'm hoping to re-create this look on the 800 (pic courtesy of Touratech)

Figured I'd start the thread so I could document the process.

Nice! How much? And how big?

The tank was 1300 unpainted, and 500 to paint. It added a little over 5 additional gallons. With the stock tank (which stays) you have close to 10 gallons. This will extend the touring range to 400 - 500 miles depending...

I got the tank back from a graphics company. It looks good. Broke up the YELLOW and got pretty close to what I envisioned.

The next step is actually getting it onto the bike....

Is that for the 800? If so, who makes it, and how much of a pain was it to install?

My tank looks big, but it's fairly thin. Doesn't hold as much, but I think that will be better when dealing with it off road. If you look at the straight on shots of the 800 on the Touratech OBDR ride, it actually doesn't look that much wider than the stock fairings/plastic... Tank finished and installed

I finally got the project done. I had some grand aspirations to do some of the work myself, but, in the end, I decided to let my local shop do the install. In part because the instructions suck, and I have great faith in the mechanics at the shop (also I figured any "mess ups" would have to be covered by them).

I went and picked it up last Thursday (it was 9 degrees that morning) so my test ride was fairly short.

Here are a few shots.

Its nice and all.... but where on this continent are you going to go where you need that sort of range? I'd hate to fight that much weight........

My original configuration got just shy of 200 miles before the fuel light went on. When I went to Touratech, they said they don't usually run the tank full. I figure 3 gallons in the tank, with the 4 in the main tank will get me wherever I want to go in Nevada.

I'd grown accustomed to my GSA (I had a 1150 and a 1200) and its fuel range. Even when I did a long range road ride I really liked not having to keep an eye out for the gas station, or start the calculation everytime I saw one along the road.

I had no problem with riding either of my GSA's off road, but on the 1200 I always made sure I was a little down from the 8.7 the tank held.

I reallllly like the 800 in comparison to my old rides, and although there is some give and take, I'm happy with the decision to go with the big tank. If I want to have something to "throw around" in the brush I have my KTM 530.
