Fathers' Day Gathering 2009 (pictures and stories)

Departing Sandy Wednesday afternoon, we planned on taking a little different route through Moab, instead of Grand Junction as we had done before. We stopped in Moab for gas and a bite at the Moab Brewery.

We turned off of 191 approximately 30 miles outside of Moab. After some twisty, gut-tossing roads, we arrived in Colorado...
The truck turned 168.

Spent the next two nights in Ouray as a family, swimming at the hot springs, seeing the sights, and relaxing. We ate dinner at the 'Outlaw' where Hilary and I both had excellent filet mignon and NY Strips. Highest of recommendations for the place.
We saw some nice cruisers around town:

We were then scheduled to meet folks from the surrounding states for a little Father's Day reconnoitering....

We met up with Matt and Becky and their two super-cute kids Sam and Ellen at the parking lot of the Hot Springs Pool. We were there hanging out in the sun, eating PB and Honey sandwiches and Pringles when we saw the infamous Jacket-Mobile roll into the parking lot. We spent some time chatting, and getting to know each other before deciding to call it in and head up Yankee Boy Basin for a little sightseeing. Matt figured he would be able to catch the rest of the crew via Ham Radio from up in the basin, and we could then head over the mountain to Silverton where we would be meeting with the rest of the crew.

Friday: Ouray and Yankee Boy Basin.

After dropping off the family in downtown Ouray for some ice cream, I met the Moody family down the road at the hot springs. When I told the elder Moody child that I had a son his same age, he asked: "Does he like transformers?" Yes. "Does he like Star Wars?" Yes. He managed a smile after the second yes.

We rode up for a quick view of Yankee Boy Basin before heading to camp.

A shot of an abandoned mine up Yankee Boy, which I believe was camp for FDG 2007?

Camping with a large group of people plus kids can sometimes be unnerving, worrying about your kids crying, being mean, or even just not gettting along. It seemed that the kids were long lost cousins just reunited, as they all played wonderfully. We took a cue from Greg and last year's father's day trip and we set aside a bin for Alexander to put all of his toys he wanted to bring into. Once we arrived in camp, and the bin dug out, it was playtime...

[*]Sliding down muddy hills on your bum is good fun that can last for days,

Yes indeed...

Friday was a beautiful day; sun, a few clouds, and temperatures around 70. Saturday started with clouds, then rain, then snow, then rain. A couple of groups continued to brave the elements and explore the roads above treeline, and a few others opted to ride out the storm over some hot coffee and in one case (Nutella) hummus in Silverton.:coffeedrink:
Finally the clouds broke up and we were spared a rain-soaked evening around the fire. :camping: And if my empty tequila bottle is any indication, it was a grand night with great company.

A few shots from Saturday, including the perfunctory water crossing shot.

Camp was fantastic. Hilary (who is generally somewhat shy) couldn't stop commenting on how much she enjoyed the company of the others there, the cutest of cute kids, and of course the magnificent San Juans.

Some shots from camp, as well as our ride up to the old mining town:
