Ok so I am curious what you carry and like. I am a bit of a knife lover (not a fanatic). I feel it is one of three items everyone should carry. Now I do not think everyone needs a large rambo knife since a nice folder can work wonders.

Personally I love my Benchmade Knives. I have been carrying their folders for a long time and have used this one for the past 4 years. it is a 550 griptilian. I have beat the heck out of this knife with no issues. I have decided to finally send it in for a tune up and I should have it back in a week or so.

I have recently decided to try using a fixed blade knife for daily carry. I did not want to spend a ton on my first one incase I decided it was to bulky. I decided a red series drop rant from benchmade would fit the bill. It is a large knife to me at 9" over all but to my surprise I have had it on my hip for 3 days now and it is not an issue. I am aware it is there when I put on my seatbelt and things like that but it is not in they way as of yet.

Personally I look for a blade with good edge holding ability as well as a partial serated blade. I cut alot of rope and straps and the serated section makes quick work of those things. I like a real funcional blade with a releaved tip but a nice solid body. Thin flimsy blades to me are useless (think case canoe style knife) They just do not hold up to hard use and to me that is paramount. I tend to use my knife for everything. I might be cutting open a box one day, or cutting a steak in camp the next. Heck i even use it as a prying tool in certain conditions. again another no no but in the real world it happens

In a fixed blade knife I am learning since this is the first one I have actually carried as a daily blade. I really like the grip however I am unsure that I like the fact that the end is solid rubber. I kind of have it in my head that the butt of a handle should be metel for striking. I know that it is never good to use a knife in this fasion both for safety and the knife, however a knife to me is not only a companion but a tool. The larger blade size that the rant offers is nice and the ability to handle it firmly since the grip is bigger is a nice thing. SO far I am very hapy for the $80.00 I spent. I might upgrade in a few months to a blue line narimbus fixed blade from benchmade or possibly go to a different brand. we will see.

I am sure some of you have a randle or 2 and one day I might drop the coin and get on the multi year wait list but at this point I am happy with a qualtiy production knife.

Then there's the Rambo knife you speak of... that stays in the rig.. and is hardly ever used.

Camillus Navy Electrician's Knife. Since 1979 I've worn out 3 of these. Have to occasionally grind down the foot of the hilt to keep the point inside the bolsters. :)

My last one had a mark near the tip of the screw driver blade for use in gapping spark plugs. I've no idea where the mark came from. We just needed to gap in the field and I used that mark. I later mic'd it, and it was exactly 0.035" at the mark.

For camping I carry my favorite fixed-blade, a ka-bar 3/4-length tanto with a combo blade. I like this knife because it has a full length tang and is nigh indestructable. I've used it and a hammer to chop wood - seriously. I have one in my Jeep at all times, and another in my camping gear box. Great value on an American-made knife, at under 50 bucks.

For daily carry, I have a couple Spyderco Delicas, one with a straight edge and one with a combo edge. I usually have one of those two clipped to a pocket when I'm out and about.

My daily carry is a Benchmade AFCK
My beaters are the USMC KaBars

M-9 variations (including EOD), Kabar, LMF II, Tac II, Glock on top
The AFCK and Delica folders see a lot of use. The neck knife is my backup for canyoneering

I recently added the "survival" version of the Gerber LMF-II to the truck. It includes the knife, sheath with MOLLE adaptor, two leg straps, and the belt cutter with its own sheath

Gerber Tac II survival knife and Blackjack Assault Team II knife

The Tac II was allowed for pilots and paratroopers because it had two fasteners. I bought one for me and one for a USMC pilot I know. Supposedly was sold in PXs in the '80s too. The Blackjack was a gift and is carbon steel with a simple leather sheath.

I have a few other odds and ends such as mil issue 1992 Camillus stainless pocket knives and some KaBar variations. I sold my Phrobis M-9 and Phrobis mini M-9 "SEAL" knife when the prices got temptingly high on Ebay. The Tac II is starting to look that way now as it is up 30% over what I paid for it.

My current work knife is a Buck/Strider military folder. Before that it was a Spyderco serrated folder which I have retired (It served me well through my enlistment and then for another 5 years). I actually carried an automatic stilletto ("Switchblade") all through highschool and nobody ever freaked out about it (my art teacher really liked it but then he was also a captain in the armed forces reserve).I actually pulled the Spyderco out once in anger in an alleyway and it stopped the beating of a sex trade worker (dad would have been so proud). The adrenalin rush was awesome but I made a mental note to be more careful in the future. I still have a Buck folder I purchased in the late 80's that I use to this day to gut deer with and then strip the hide with.I have collected a lot of knives over the years and the Swiss Army Soldiers model holds a place close to my heart (I took it on my winter warfare course). On a whim (I wanted one) I bought a Phrobis M9 bayonet and it spent a couple of years clipped to my battle order webbing even though I had been issued a bayonet by the CF.

I am a big fan of Blade-Tech knives and Spyderco. I cary a Spyderco Native everyday, and mix in my Blade-Tech Wegner Pro-Hunter. Both are CPM S30V stainless steel, the best stainless for edge retention. I also carry the Pro Hunter as a backup for hunting.

My next folder will be the Blade-Tech M.L.E.K.

i have several that i use and carry, but my favorite and most used knife is a cold steel bushman.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq1EFWVV3C0&feature=related

The Bushman can't be any good, it's too cheap! What's the point in buying a knife if you can't brag about how much it cost? :)

I bought a full size one some years ago, and liked it enough to buy two minis later. The large one is my heavy-duty kitchen knife. For example, I last used it with a rubber mallet to break up a block of chocolate. However, its case is now occupied by a Scandinavian Leku knife (with home made handle). Leku is the Laplander all-purpose camp knife.

But my most useful knife in this size category is a Mora 2000. I keep it in a large fanny pack which I wear when walking the dog on brushy trails. The 2000 is small enough to carry like this, has a bland, non-threatening case, but is large enough to clear blackberry vines. I also like the easy sharpening, single-bevel Scandinavian grind. Stainless steel is also nice, since I don't have to wipe it clean after every use.

While I do have several heavy duty blades like the Bushman and the pilot's survival knife, I prefer the thinner, easy cutting blades like the Mora and Swedish Frosts (e.g. Swedish army knife).

Benchmade Knives

Every day carry: Osbourne 960

This is extra slim in your pocket. It's also very lightweight. Nice balance between thin and light, yet a full length folding blade.

Expedition use: Presidio 520 extremely durable

Extra knife to keep handy: Griptilian 551 A lot of knife for not so much $.

I've carried one of these almost every day since 2002 - Colombia River Knife & Tool M15-Zxx series. Best $50 I've spent, I believe. The blade is not the best steel I've ever seen, but it is good and is thick as can be (nearly 1/8"), so you can use it to cut, pry, poke, stab, and all kinds of other things that would damage other more "precise" cutting instruments. And for me the index finger flipper is much easier and faster to open than a thumb-operated setup (though it retains that feature, too, if you care to use it).

I'm quite impressed with CRKT's knives and would definitely buy another.
