Flashlights

Well I picked G2X Pro today and I am just waiting for it to get dark to test it out. I did play with it inside the house and I am a little shocked how much light this thing pumps out, can't wait to see it in real dark conditions.

Wow, 200 lumens really puts out. This is put in the good purchase column.

I my pick up another one.
Where I work it is pitch dark with no outside lighting in some places.
The light really helps.

At first I thought I wanted the tactical model with just the 200 lumens but all REI had was the dual. I thought the switch might be a little cantankerous but that turned out to be a dumb worry. Last night I went out to my favorite dark sky place because it was cold and clear, a good night to peep some stars. The place is a clearing about the size of a football field surrounded by tall trees. It is very dark at night with no ambient or stray light at all. You know the first thing I did was spark up the Sure Fire and it was nuts. On 15 lumens I was able to faintly pick up trees about a 100 yards away. On 200 lumens it was almost too bright, I mean spotlight bright. The spill was enough to almost light up the width, again about a 90-100 yards. It was great scanning the woods with the light when I heard something stepping through the leaves. 200 lumens is too bright to walk through the trails but the 15 lumens works perfectly for that, more than enough light to see but not enough to blind your. Even at 15, this thing is way brighter than my old Maglite. I hate to say it but I might also pick up another one just to leave in Luisa's car. She doesn't have a flashlight now and this one is more than small enough to keep in the glovebox without getting in the way and bright enough for her to shine people in the eyes while she is waiting on me or AAA if she gets a flat or something.

Corey & 7wt: Will the G2X Pro allow you to return to the last used output setting without double/triple clicking? In other words if I used the G2X Pro in the 15 lumen mode (or the 200 lumen mode) will it always turn on to that setting with one click or do you have to cycle through the other of the two lumen output settings?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan, this is the way it works.
Click or hold in half way the button and it defaults to the 15 lumen setting.
Let go of the button if half holding it in and within 2 seconds push all the way or hold in half way, it goes to the 200 lumen setting.

If on the 15 lumen setting and you click to turn it off and more than 2 seconds elapses, it defaults to the 15 lumen setting again.

One thing with this model is it is not good for Morse code, as it would go between the 2 settings.

Another thing I read over on candlepowers forum is since it defaults to the lower setting, police do not like it since they would want to have it go to the high setting first to blind an assailant.
Maybe the tactical series do that, not sure.

I really dig this light though, it is so bright.
Will have fun with it for sure camping.

The tactical series is only 200 lumen so on is on and off is off. It's the one I originally wanted for the blinding effect but after using the GX2 Pro with the dual levels I am glad I got it. The 15 lumen is much more useful for walking on trails and looking under your truck and stuff like that. The 200 at night is very bright and it would make little operations like opening your tent in the dead of night a blinding affair.

Dan,

The Jet Beam Jet-III M will save your settings. In addition, you can rotate the lamp assembly a very short twist and that will keep it in the high output (225 lumen) mode.

Also, because the tailcap is recessed, you can use the adjustability feature to adjust it down to 2-5 lumens and stand it upgright and use it as a lamp in a tent or under an awning.

Mostly I really like how easy it is to carry and the adjustable output feature. I use that more than I thought I would. You can tailor the light output to your needs at the time.

Go with the Surefire G2X Pro dual , the click cap is worth he extra 10 bucks, I've been using their lights for at least 10 years and and this is proberly the best light and value they have ever did. My second best choice is the Inova brand, they have changed in the last year so not sure abut the new line of lines

The Overland Journal newsletter that just came yesterday has a piece in it on the new lights.
http://www.overlandjournal.com/newsletter/2010_11/lights/

Me seeing that ad awhile back is what got me interested in the new light.

Used it at work yesterday morning in the dark, and the boss was impressed with how bright it was.

Even the security officers there liked it, one was carrying a Pelican light twice the size and not near as bright.

I've converted almost all of my SureFires using Malkoff drop in LED assemblies (had to keep one G3 incandescent to work with an IR filter for the 1PN34 on my PSL). Then again, none of my SureFires are what you would consider toolbox lights. :sombrero:

I have several Energizer headlamps that work great and keep your hands free:

I have a few of the 3 LED and a few 7 LED models and have them stashed in various places where I may need them (one in each gear bag, glove compartment, around the house, etc.). I keep a pack of AAA's handy, but I've only had to replace the bateries in one, and that's because I left it on.

I have two Surefire G2's. I just picked up the Surefire style 2 pack of flashlights at my local Sams club. Just as bright.....uses AAA's and $13.00 for a TWO pack. I'm gonna go pick up a couple more this week.

I have this very one and love it. A feature I look for is the way they switch and the way you turn it on. I like this one because one switch direction is red the other is white light on. I don't like the ones where you need to go through all settings to get to or from red. It defeats some of the purpose of the red light and ruins your night vision.

the Petzl Zippka Plus2 is my favorite light and happens to be a headlamp. i love the fact that it takes up no room yet can be a headlamp, wristlamp, attach to backpack straps on your chest, or even attach to tree limbs or tent poles. it also has a red mode for night vision.

a more taditional band style would of course be good for extended use, say for caving, but for all around the camp the Zippka's little retractable band rocks.

It looks like you need to scroll through all of the settings to get to the red, right?
