Flat Bed question

I have a 2006 Dodge 1500 in pretty decent shape with 84,000 miles. A basic work truck nothing fancy. The bed is starting to rot away around the wheels on both sides. I have a guy that can build me a flat bed to replace it. I am in PA and have heard conflicting stories about doing this and whether you are allowed to, I have found information on enhanced vehicle inspection, which seems to fit the definition of what I want to do but does't really give specifics on what is required to be completed to pass this inspection.

Do anyone have an idea of what is required here, I don't want to start a project without know what needs to be completed, Thanks

I would think the primary concerns are bumper height, and proper lights for a given width. 80"+ I think the DOT wants quite a lot of lighting, whereas under 80" you just need STT, reverse, and plate light. I agree though, contact whoever would be inspecting it.

Here in Pennsylvania any owner who replaces a pick up bed with a flat bed is SUPPOSED to have the title changed to a "Modified Vehicle" title. Apparently politicians can only tell a truck from the back end...

A Modified Vehicle title has the same requirements as a Reconstructed Title. As part of the application process, you have to have a registered inspection station do an "enhanced inspection" verifying PADOT compliance for lighting, mounting, etc. This inspection sticker is for actual application for the title change and is stuck on the paperwork. You also have to include photos of the vehicle from all sides. You turn your paperwork work in to the messenger service, and with luck, in a month or so, you get the new title. You then go get a normal inspection for your vehicle's windshield.

All that said, most people around here don't bother with all that. If you are anywhere near Harrisburg, PA there is a red 3rd Gen 1500 usually parked on on one of the main highways with a 6.5" aluminum flat bed. Over all, I like the look with proper wheels and tires.

Thanks for the input, I actually discovered that one of the girls who works in our office husband does enhanced inspections, so he is going to get me the information that I need. With the exception of the bed it is in pretty decent shape so probably worthwhile doing fairly right. Hopefully next week I will have some info on the bed costs. Once that is somewhat set I will work one getting the lights and other accessories that I will need. I will be in Harrisburg next week, I will keep an eye out.
