You mean import & register in mexico?
bushcamper

Can this really be registered in the US legally? How about by a US citizen but resident of Mexico or another Central American country? If so could said resident bring it in and drive it here?

Yes, that was what I meant. It might be a way around the regulations for someone who has established residence somewhere where the truck can be registered legally. It might then be able to be brought back into the country at least for touring.

I don't have a residence elsewhere so I'm not in the market. Just wondering if it might work for someone who does.

like your Idea...
our car is legally register in Australia, where we bought it, this is without limits as long as we continue register-payment year by year. This is still legal registering as we checked with Western Australian Department of Transport.
look at this now...
driving to the US... coming from Mexico... when entering at the Mexican border you buy a car import visa for 10 years for about $50, which means we can leave the car there.
question...
does anyone know, whether this mexican import is valid for the US too?

Mexican permits are absolutely not valid in the US.

Thanks for the reference. It appears to be a workaround only for nonresidents or visitors (holders of foreign passports not seeking immigration). Nonresident status seems somewhat ambiguous and arbitrary and can be given on the opinion of an individual CBP officer. So it looks like it might work for a U.S. citizen living abroad on a residency visa but the limit is still one year and there are no extensions.

From the original cite

"Can I bring my car into the U.S. temporarily?

"Nonresidents/visitors may import a vehicle duty-free for personal use up to (1) one year if the vehicle is imported in conjunction with the owner?s arrival. Vehicles imported under this provision that do not conform to U.S. safety and emission standards must be exported within one year and may not be sold in the U.S. There is no exemption or extension of the export requirements. "

doubtful, if I am not mistaken you can get a temporary permit for 12 months, then the vehicle must leave the country.
No idea how soon or if it can be brought back in again.
