For those considering 255/85/16s...ST/MAXX is coming soon

Curious what people are paying for them? Since they don't show anywhere in the northeast I asked the dealer to call and check with the distributor. They had some Florida and Texas and by the time they got to him they were going to be $262 each mounted plus tax. But he said he could the STT 285/70/17 for $253 each. We both couldn't understand why that is. I might just have to do tread depot instead of supporting my local dealer....

Discount tire just quoted me $273.20 per tire mounted out the door. I believe this included their "Certificate for Repair" on each tire but have a call into them to confirm. They told me $239 per tire. Treaddepot.com is at $229 delivered to 55398.

If your quote includes mounting balancing and the "certificate for repair" then that doesn't seem to bad... for the 255/80/17 would come to $277.72 with tax and no road hazard. And it is $18 cheaper to start. From Treaddedepot.com they would be $229.43 with the road hazard delivered to me.

ST/Maxx LT255/85R16 Price Quotes???

I got a quote from America's Tire (Discount Tire) today - ST/Maxx LT255/85R16, $237.00 ea. + mounting, balancing, tax. etc.

Has anyone been quoted a better price?

I'm going to order tires this week, and want to get the best "price matching" I can get from America's Tire.

However, at $237 ea. for the LT255/85R16 ST/Maxx, I might be forced to stay with my stock size (LT265/75R16) at $160 ea. especially because I will need to buy 5 LT255/85R16s but only 4 LT265/75R16s. Going tall and thin will cost about $545 more than staying at 265/75R16. It's hard to justify the price difference for 1/2" in additional ground clearance.

Pretty hard to argue with that logic....

It's basically half price....

But you can't...you have to buy the 255/85r16. Dont you know size matters?! If it didn't then it wouldn't be printed on the side wall.

That's exactly why I purchased the 265/75R16!
How important is the 1/2 inch?

For my rig and the way I use it, not $545 important. Besides, I just had to pay for a root canal I wasn't expecting. :(

If I wrote down the measurements for the ST/Maxx LT265/75R16 correctly, it is a true 32" diameter tire rather than 31.6" which is the norm for that size. So I'm potentially gaining almost 1/4" ground clearance just by going with the stock size ST/Maxx. ;)

VanDOOM!
I spoke with the engineers who designed the AT3, ATP and ST Maxx and they said the Maxx runs a bit larger than most. Mainly due to the tread depth but the carcass as well.

I regret to announce that I will be unable to join the 255/85R16 club.

I ordered a set of Cooper Discoverer ST/Maxx LT265/75R16-E tires today for $160 ea. (+ mounting/balancing, tax, etc.) from America's Tire/Discount Tire.

As much as I wanted them in 255/85R16, at $237 ea. vs. $160 ea. for my stock size I couldn't justify the extra cost for the use my rig actually gets. (I have had no problem rationalizing how there might be a time that I need tall, skinny tires, but the truth is that I avoid driving in snow and the extra clearance I am giving up can be made up by choosing the right line.)

Post pictures when you have them mounted!

Are you sure you're getting ST MAXX in 265/75R16?? Everything I can find says that's a $200+ tire... The AT3 in load range C is $160/tire... If they let you have ST Maxx for that price, you got a heckuva deal!!!

I'm seriously considering going to 255/80R17's to save a little coin, and then they'll fit my truck in a few years when the tread is 1/2 gone and I want new tires again... :)

Yes, I'm absolutely sure. I even went out to my rig to look at the receipt again. Shocker also paid $160/tire for the LT265/75R16 ST/Maxx on 3/15. It was the one-day price on Discount Tire Direct Ebay with the coupon code, which was price matched by my local America's/Discount Tire.

BTW, I was quoted $140/tire for the AT3 (for which you also get an $80 prepaid Visa as a rebate when you buy 4, bringing the per tire price down to $120).

I was planning on the 255's(on 16's) when my current 32x11.50(on 15 inch rims) run out of mileage some time this summer. If there is that much of a price difference then I might just stick with the stock size like you did. The 265/75's are fairly close to my current 32's, correct?
