For those considering 255/85/16s...ST/MAXX is coming soon

I mounted a set of 255/80-17 on the JKU at lunch break today. I'll get some pictures and start putting them through their paces on the way home. I have a little dirt I can hit.

Just ordered a set of five for my Lexus LX450. Price will be $1371, mounted with warranty from Discount Tire. I could have got them cheaper online and had my brother mount them up, but I wanted a warranty I could use away from home, and I've had great service from discount in the past. My truck is currently on stock springs, but I expect to do a 2-2.5 inch in the next 6 months. My biggest reason for going tall/skinny was maintaining 14mpg.

Where are the pics, Bill?

Where did you get them?

These are gonna be my next set after the BFG A/T's wear out sometime this summer.

Discount Tire on State Bridge in Alpharetta; they bought my OE (craptastic) tires for $120 each!
And match interweb pricing. I bring them a case of beer for an install tip....

Took the dirt road home and only can report on washboard and road noise; very very happy so far...

I just got off the phone with cooper, they said the tire diameter is 32.80 for the 255/80/17. and the weight is 51 lbs. wish it was an 85 series to get the 33.3 diameter. my 285s were 33 on the button. but the weight was 61 lbs and the jeep didn't like that. Bill, how does your jeep drive with them on there now?

No pics yet as it has been dumping rain for the last two days here. This has given some solid wet driving observations. So far so good in the wet. Less wheel spin from stops for sure and the backend of the Tacoma hasn't been stepping out as easily on the low speed stop and turns.

I'm going to hunt for some mud puddles on the way home today to see what they can do.

Velvet.
You only hear them at all in fast turns and then it's the light Velcro sound, not a mudtire sound.
They feel much better than the minivan tires that it came with. You felt every surface irregularity and pebble with those.

There's a little more rubber on them than the Toyo's on the PW had. Wish we had a little snow to try them on...

Hey, I'm in that same rain storm and could use some new tire photos to brighten up the day!

As some like to say on "other" forums, "Pics or it didn't happen!"

awesome, sounds like a much better fit for the JK than the 285s were.
I had 285/75-16 Cooper STTs on my old JK on ProComp 8" alloys. I loved those tires except for the rolling resistance and weight; the ProComps weighed less than the Jeep wheels though.
The only other time I ran a big 255 was a set of KM2s in a 255/85-16. They were great in mud, offroad. But on wet streets, the Jeep was just too light for their tread and I hydroplaned everywhere.
I think these Maxxes are the answer. Good voids, good siping, just wide enough and big enough around. No mods necessary to fit them on a Jeep with stock wheels.

I can't decide between these or the Toyo MT in the same size, the price is not that much more for the Toyo making it a tough choice. I have to have good daily driver and snow performance though and think the ST Maxx might win.

St maxx hands down. As a rule mt tires are horrid in snow. I had the st maxx, awesome tire.

Maybe as a rule, but I haven't found my Toyo's to be particularly objectionable in the snow conditions we get here in Denver ... yes, they'll break loose without careful throttle control, but so did the BFG Rugged Trails that came on my Xterra (ostensibly an AT, but not an aggressive one).

I've not driven a set of ST Maxxs, myself, so I can't directly compare the two; but the Toyo MTs actually do have a bit of siping to them, and have been good for me as an all-around tire that I can take anywhere ... they do wear a bit quicker than I'd like, though, and need to be rotated with every oil-change to stay on top of abnormal wear issues (but my suspension is older and in need of a bit of work), so take that for what it's worth.

255/85 on a LX450 with stock lift (so far). They feel a little heavier on steering and braking that did the stock tires (Michelin LTX)
