I read the reviews on Tread Depot and some seem to be less favorable...

3.5 stars out of 5 total

Some complain of side wall stiffness and other complain of cracking around the tire near the bead...
"The back of my truck swayed from side to side like the sidewalls were bending." By Dave from Newton Falls Ohio on 09/19/11, 1996 Ford F-250. 25 mi on tires
"When you go around a corner going down the road at just 40 mph, the back of my truck sways to the outside and feels like I'm driving a damn boat." By Louis from Avon Minnesota on 05/23/11 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 50 mi on tires

Some others talk of bead problems...
"I have 800 miles on them and the tread side walls are seperating from the bead on all 4 tires." By Josh from Bland VA on 07/03/11 800 mi on tires
"They are great for getting through mud or snow or anything but they are all cracking along the rims and all 4 have to be replaced." By Steve from Madison Wisconsin on 07/19/13 2004 Ford F-150 8000 mi on tires

comments are copied form Tread Depot website... http://www.treaddepot.com/tire/90000019869.html

There are others that are real good reviews too. It is that these sound somewhat concerning. Do you all have any comments?

Tread Depot lists the Maxx in the 255/85, but showed it as unavailable. Email inquiry resulted in the following response :
Tread Depot Support
- Looks like early January on those. I will add you to our notify list. Thanks

Sounds like they are ready to sell them when they get stock.

Read through those reviews. Hard to understand how so many people can say 'best tire I've ever owned' while others say 'worst tire ever'. Tough to read anonymous reviews and trust what you're reading. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between, but the big question is who is closer to being right?!

Most all the the input from epo has been positive. The price on tread depo with shipping for 4 285/75/16 was $997. A local discount quoted me $920 installed plus tax so $1007 out the door. It is a little odd that the site lists the the 285/75/16 as having a overall hight of 33.1" and the 255/85/16 at 32.8". Most other tires it is the opposite with the 255 being slightly taller.

My guess is that the "swaying side to side" guy had WAY too much air pressure in the tires, or too much tire on too little rim, or was towing a trailer with just about zero tongue weight and blamed the tires. Tall tread tires run at high pressure can feel floaty, particularly compared to used up tires with no tread at all. Not sure about the cracking around the sidewall thing... perhaps a bad batch? Those comments were both in the very beginning of the tire, so it's possible some jerkoff was just spewing garbage.

I'm still running a set of 7 year old STT's, which still don't have much weather checking, even though they've been out in the weather most of their lives, and run at 15psi for summer after summer, on and off road. I"ll be bucking up for a set of 255 Maxx's when they're available. I'll let you all know if I find any problems with them. :)

Looks like Tread Depot has them listed in both 255/85R16 and 255/80R17, with the 17's being a good bit cheaper... Whoa, they have the whole lineup of Maxx's!! http://www.treaddepot.com/group/dstmx.html
With the 17's being a good price, maybe I'll put a set on the GMC too!! :) Interesting that this info isn't on Cooper's website yet... Perhaps the height is a typo. ?? I'll still take them, even if they are a tad smaller than a 285!!

Interesting. I will have to give them a call in a bit to see if they really have them in stock. Still torn between the 285/75 and 255/85. Time to stop think and just buy some darn tires!

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
I heard that Cooper was recently sold to an overseas company, so they are no longer manufactured in the good 'ol USA.
Is it true?

Sold, but I don't know if tires will all be made overseas. It would make sense to keep on making tires here in the USA. Maybe...

GURGAON, India and FINDLAY, Ohio, USA – June 12, 2013 – Apollo Tyres Ltd (NSE: ApolloTYRE) and Cooper Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: CTB) today announced the execution of a definitive merger agreement under which a wholly-owned subsidiary of Apollo will acquire Cooper in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $2.5 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, which has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies, Cooper stockholders will receive $35.00 per share in cash. The transaction represents a 40% premium to Cooper's 30-day volume-weighted average price.

This is a disappointment. I have bought many sets of Cooper tires and they were always one of my first choices. I don't think I will consider them my number one any longer. I like to buy American if I can.

Funny, I looked at some Nitto tires and they were made in the USA.

Thanks for the information.
I too am sad to hear about the sale.

I'll be sticking with Goodyear.

This fella has an interesting site:

Might want to check your Goodyears... From what I've seen, many of their tires are actually made overseas. Cooper "LT" tires all say "Made in the USA", and will continue to be made here. Actually, from what I can find in my surfing, the deal was announced some time ago, but it has yet to actually happen financially... With the big release of ST Maxx sizes, I wonder if it's perhaps not going to happen, and so Cooper is back to business as usual... ??

I hope so. I think most Coopers that we will use are made in the USA and will most likely continue. Cooper does have plants in Asia. I am still kinda hooked on them thar ST Maxx tires. I talked to my local Cooper dealer Friday and they just talked with the rep that the 255's are coming in the next 30 days.

From what I could find out the DuraTrac is made in the USA.
The Cooper ST Maxx is a very fine tire... my brother and brother-in-law are both running them.
My brother-in-law ran them to the Arctic Circle and back from AZ without a hitch. Great tires all around.
Let's hope they continue to make them in the States.

My ST MAXX 285/75/16 tires arrived a few days ago. Stamped with "made in the USA" if anyone is worried.
