JIM! You are the man

It is so cool to have a wheel set built by a friend and forum member

Glad to see UPS got them there intact. I can't wait to here what you think about those rims. I've used a lot of Velocity rims for both road and mountain bike wheels and really like their products. Those P-35's look awesome, I may have to build myself a new set of wheels. They would look good on a custom Quiring monster-cross frame!

What hit me immediately, is that they look perfect. I love the all black wheel, black hub and black spokes. I also love the profile of the rim, a large radius that looks like it could support a tank.

Perfect execution of the vision amigo.

Scott, I liked yours so much I'm going to build a set with the P-35's for me!
Thought I'd make mine a little different though, I just ordered these. Trouble is I may need to build a new bike to put them on.

How's the bike coming? Where's the shakedown cruise going to be since the White Rim is washed out? I'll be out west next month and looking to do a bike trip.

That wheelset should be bomber. I have the Blunts on my 650b and they are stout. They give a nice tire profile.

For sure get 3 rings if your really making an expedtition bike! No question about it!

For conversation sake, if this was a world traveler expedition bike, steel is the only choice. Bust a Ti frame in BFE and good luck getting it fixed. I would also have canti studs added just in case of disc failure.

May try to crank out the WR in a day next year.....

I am going to meet with Daryl this week and check the status. I am excited!

With the White Rim bombed, I am not sure of the best option, though the Kokopelli trail could be interesting. I would also be up to checking out Fruita (never been).

Recently talked with Rim Tours and they stated that a hike a bike trail had been put down through the washout.

Some friends and i are still planning on doing WRIAD next month but no sag wagon.

The Kokopelli is a great option. This trail was established by COPMOBA in the mid eighties and is a real classic. Two other trails worth considering are the Paradox and the Tabeguache. Both of these trail were established by COPMOBA as a follow on to the Kokopelli. All three are located such that they can be ridden together as a single trail called the Grand Loop. The total distance is around 380 miles combined, with over 48,000 feet of climbing and might just be the premier bikepacking challenge in the US. Detailed maps of each trail are available at COPMOBA.org, but you do have to be a member to get them. Even with the maps route finding is a challenge on the Tabeguache and especially the Paradox.

It is my plan to ride the loop in the spring or fall of 2011 over the course of 10 days or so. I will start a separate thread as the plan becomes more organized. It would be great to do this with a group of up to six riders. It can be done unsupported but having a single sag vehicle for food and water would reduce the difficulty level as water sources are few and have to be planned for. Most of the trail can be driven, but not all, so a few bypasses would be necessary for a vehicle.

In any case it would be great to preview one of the segments this fall as a warm up to the complete loop.

Here is a satellite image of the loop.

Another option to consider is the Cathedral Valley loop near Capital Reef NP. Is is a shorter distance of 60 miles and can be done over the course of two leisurely days. Optional loops are easily added to increase the distance. This would be a great ride to test out the new bike and associated kit. I did this ride about 4 years ago during heavy rain. Riding through flooding washes was interesting to say the least.

Last time I looked the official White Rim trail web page said no bikes past hardscrable. However it does not say that today, still says no motor vehicles past potato bottom.

The rangers said (last weekend) that they believe they may have to blast out a new route for the road, as they do not believe they will be able to add enough dirt to make it hold the road again. If this is the case, obviously, this will take a very long time to accomplish.

From all the pictures I have seen of the White Rim Trial after the washout I see no reason it could not be hiked. If they allow it a bike could be shouldered or walked. Some additional risk but certainly do-able.
