Also consider looking at Land Cruisers (or Lexus as we get stuck with in North America).

If you are considering used I'd go back as far as Lexus LX450, LX470, etc.

All those succesful miles on all those Jeeps is very encouraging. I've been really interested in a 4 door Rubi. I've just known a few people with Jeeps and things broke/died regularly with them. That and I've run into a number of Jeeps on the trail having issues. But, now that I am thinking about it more, that probably has something to do with the fact that there are so many Jeeps on the trail that you have a higher likelyhood of running into one.

I think most of the issues people have had are do to modifying 1 thing without changing the other things needed to support that mod.

(or the Carter carb on the early YJs)

For example. Running 35" tires on a body lifted Jeep and super wide offset wheels with no other supporting mods. Then people wonder why their shifter hits the body, the Jeep wanders without proper alignment, stabilizer etc. etc.

Many of those issues were actually addressed on the JK to a point. By giving the owners larger, stronger axles to start with. Allowing for bigger tires with less lift, suspension geometry that allows for certain changes easily from the facotry, etc etc.

Aside from the trackbar mount, there haven't been many failure issues with JK's that are mildly modified.

While I really appreciate all the detailed responses, it wasn't my intention to start a brand/model debate. I originally asked for ownership experience testimonials. I was interested in whether or not owners liked their vehicles and were satsified with the factory build quality and reliability. I hate the process of buying a vehicle and tend to keep them for a very long time, so I want to be sure what I do buy is capable of lasting. Does anyone remember the movie, The Money Pit? It was an early 80's movie with Tom Hanks about a guy who buys a house and begins remodeling it. The house works against him. It was supposed to be a comedy. At the time the movie came out, I was remodeling a rental house that worked against me every step of the way. I sat through that movie without ever cracking a smile. It just wasn't funny to me. I don't want to repeat that experience with a new or new-to-me vehicle. That said, this is the nature of an online forum; conversations take on a life of their own. Thanks very much for all the responses. And, I hope the Jeep owners and the Land Rover owners will still like each other after this thread drops off the top of the forum.

I have never own nether brand but I have work as an automotive technician for the last 15 years and when I read this thread I see mostly brand loyal owners on both side embellish the quality of these vehicle.

I spent many a year owning three high end used car dealerships. I did a good business selling high end SUV's and various models of RR. Having said that I would never own one as they thought they were Jaguars. What do I mean by that? They developed lot rot very quickly. One day everything worked and the next day it was in to the dealer for a 2000.00 repair. The ones I took in with "complete books and records" were scary. It got to the point that I never advertised the fact and only produced them after the sale. Any body who had simply went through and added up the recipets and divided the total by the months the unit was old would have been foolish to buy the vehicle.

I had heard about how great and sophisticated LR3's were so was happy when one tagged along one day. To say the least I was unimpressed. The LR3 owner was frustrated as well when there were times after quite a while trying (and being spotted by a very competant fellow LR guy) he simply could not make any progress up something my 4 dr JK had just gone up. I had to back down and drag him and myself up - which I did easily. For what it's worth the LR3 was pretty new and very well equipped.I think the LR3 is a very nice Aspen and Vail vehicle.

I've got a TJ and also the 4 dr JK Rubicon and I think the JK Rubi is by far the best stock off road vehicle you can buy today. And as good as it is stock it can be easily improved at a reasonable cost. The only real flaw in the vehicle (other than it needing a bit more under the hood) is it's breakover angle. It really needs more rubber and a bit of a lift to bring it to it's full potential.

I love my JK Unlimited, by far the vehicle that suits my needs and my wants the best. Does great duty as daily driver, company vehicle, weekend warrior, kids taxi, grocery getter, dog carrier, family vacation shuttle, tow vehicle and whatever else we through at her.
