Freelander as an overland vehicle?

Name one "instructor" speaking highly of the Freelander.

Just finished instructing at a Rover Dealer Event today and the DEALER was glad they are no longer made! It's not JUST the motor - the whole truck was a bad idea! It was a market reaction, that is all.

Compared to the Freelander? Yes. (It suffers from not having a low range however...)

Come on Steve - who are these "instructors" that like the Freelander? Land Rover didn't like the Freelander!

timmy!!!!!!!

I passed a freelander last night on the interstate and I was scared it was going to blow up in front of me. While passing the freelander the driver was starring at the disco like dumbfounded.

I never read this thread because the freelanders are such junk.

cruised through today laughing at the high points.

all I can add is I know of a shop in chicago that has 4 nearly perfect freelanders sitting outside.

all 4 have engines that took a dump.

I think these should have been call freelandies because I am pretty sure all the dead ones could be had for free if you really wanted them.

Glad to see that the OP made a good decision and went for a D1

this is one real good example where information not asked for is the answer people really need.

"Land Rover" didn't like the Freelander- what does that even mean? A dealer guy said he didn't like it and that then means the entire company as a whole has taken the stance that they collectively don't like them?
The US versions and their choice to do the V6 was questionable at best- using an engine from an unstable supplier like Midland Powertrain was not smart. The transmission was always condemned because the dealers weren't trained how to troubleshoot them too.
The biggest seller LR had worldwide- only a failure here in the US.

the freelander was a major failure in the US market

Late contribution.

I really wanted a Freelander SE3, with the convertible top. I owned an Isuzu Amigo for a while, and loved the half-convertible with glass over my head and wind behind. There aren't a lot of vehicles with this form factor.

Two things unsold me: the fact that I didn't fit (I'm 6' tall, but I had to bend down to see out the windshield), and the muffler hung down in the rear where it looked like it'd be scraped off on a rock.

Reliability issues worried me as well, but I'm used to those - the three amigos have been on in my DII most of its life. Seems to me like LR reliability is weighted heavily by the target market - people who want luxury cars, not utility vehicles.

Seems to me like the Defender was a "failure" as well, since it's not sold in the US anymore - LR failed to modify them to suit safety requirements. In a wider sense they failed by targeting the wrong market - instead of the Beverly Hills crowd, I think they should have marketed to the serious utility users. Sure, I'd like to buy a Defender if I could find/afford one - what I'd really like is a 110 2-door pickup with a turbodiesel.

The Defender was only a marketing tool to re-introduce LR to the North American market. They aren't going to bring back and they never would have brought here if they hadn't wanted to sell Discoveries.

Steve, once again you won't answer any questions directly. Who are these "instructors" that like the Freelander? It was and always will be a poor attempt at an SUV. How many boards are you going to spread this disinformation in?

(To those readers that don't know: Steve Young, aka "Muddy Oval" is "famous" across the Rover World Wide Web for not knowing what he is talking about and "inventing" fact and truth. Take his "advise" with skepticism and warning.)

Ah- another member of the goon gang to taint this board. Of course I'm not going to hand you names of people who you can then harrass. If poeple like you did not act like total children when it come to attempted character assassination and other childish web 'tough guy' acts, we could probably have that discussion. I'm not dragging my friends into that.
I don't "invent" anything, it's just that those who disagree and want to be "************" love to travel in their little goon gangs and drink the kool-aid together. You are the types who call people homosexual over their choice of shock absorber.

The Freelander was a success at one thing- it got Land Rover through its toughest years as the best selling SUV in Europe. They sold few here and the ones they did are not lasting long at all. It's a shame, as they are capable beyond what most people would think. Unfortunately, the Freelander in the US is soon to be a rare sighting as poor parts supply and bad engines take them out.

Oh, and the Defender name is coming back to the US. The project is in motion. Notice I said 'name.'

You're still acting like an ***-hat after all these years.

There's no goon squad, no bad guys or bullies after you Steve. You insist on lying about the trucks you owned, the jobs you had, the people you know, and what you know about Land Rovers - it gets old man. You're a grown man with a wife and responsibilities act your age dude. You are one of the most distrusted men in the Rover Community at large and it had nothing to do with these supposed bullies and "goon squads" you talk about. Your new friends here need to know this stuff.

To any moderators: do yourselves and the future of this board a favor - get rid of this clown.

Again with the false assertions- it's like a broken record from the little goon squad. Are you going to start with the typical rhetoric of calling everyone gay over their choice of suspension? Your comments here are precisely why I'm not posting names. Want to find out? Book a course with the Land Rover schools and learn something. All of the senior instructors I know rate the Freelanders capability quite high, but they know how to drive them.
Mistrusted? Maybe by people who drink the kool-aid 'over there' but I do quite well working with these trucks every day. I think the mistrust should lie with the rhetoric and cookie-cutter approach of certain cliques.

I saw two bulls fight like this once. and then they mated. No BS, I was driving along the 5 freeway near Harris ranch, close to Kettleman City, and they basically were stirring up a bunch of dust, fighting over nothing really, and then boom. I about faced and hopped back in my car... I guess in hindsight one of them must have been a horned cow. (a girl cow, that looks like a bull)

Regards,
Brian

You answer calls at a half-rate parts shop! You don't "work" with anything! Again with the exaggerations. It's sad and actually pretty funny.(That Freelander you owned was the brunt of every joke at MAR.)

Non one, and I mean NO ONE who calls himself/herself an instructor rates the Freelander highly.

Hey Steve, tell all these people about your former "top secret" security jobs you supposedly had since your in the mood to lie. And then you can reel off the list of 50 vehicles you owned. Listen up everybody, you're all in for some good stuff here!
