FSJ buildup- Tank!

Geesh...you have way nicer junkyards than we do! Any FSJ siiting in a salvage yard back this way would be a moldering pile of rust and debris in a very short time. Tank is way cleaner than most of the full sized Jeeps that I pass on the road while mucking about. Real nice find, it will be fun watching you get the old boy back on the road.

Oh man! You suck!

;)

I mean that in the best possible way.

You weren't kidding when you said it was in great condition.

Say, help me find one out your way when I'm ready for another project? LOL :D

$500 can't be wrong. Right? I'm probably going to have to put $500-$1000 to get it on the road again.

i'll be keeping the wheels, i probably will need to get some spacers though.

i'm planning on some 31x10.5x15 tires. probably some mud terrains from treadwright.

i'll probably just lift it a few inches then add some nice shocks.

Another quick session tonight on fixing up the Waggy.

I removed the Air Conditioning unit, replaced a broken window and filled all the tires up with air. I had to use a can of fix-a-flat to get one tire to fill up. With the help of my father-in-law we pulled the waggy out of the garage and turned it around. The nose is now facing the tool box and I can start tearing out and fixing a lot of stuff. Stay tuned…..

Nice to see someone save a FSJ! I love that your interior is so nice. My '87's isn't even that nice!

Sweet that you got a 401 in that thing too. Sure the fuel mileage may be bad, but I can't say that I get good fuel mileage with my 360 even. I mostly get 13 to 15, with the occasional 20+ (haven't figured that out yet).

I see you are going to get some 31X10.5's; I run Pep Boys "Definity Dakota M/T" on mine right now on stock rims. They fit just fine with my Rough Country 3" lift, although without wheel spacers, the fronts do rub the springs at full lock. I went with some Bilstein 5125 shocks, spec'd for a 4" lift, and they are super smooth.

Good luck with the tangle of vacuum lines. They sure can be frustrating, but once working, that thing should be happy.

alright

just got back from the junkyard. i picked up a fuel tank off the back of an 80's chevy suburban. i think it holds 25-30 gallons. i'm going to take off the stock tank and chuck it. this tank will go behind the rear axle.

i also picked up a coil from a 1984 ford f350.

also installed new:

-plug wires
-ford 460 distributor spacer, accel distributor cap and rotor
-changed the oil with Mobil 1 10w40
-changed the oil filter to WIX
-changed the fuel filter to a WIX

all the fram crap is in the garbage.

i'll post some pictures later.

his is just another quick update to the work being done on the Wagoneer. This weekend I went up to Montana to pick up a bunch of tune-up parts.

Today I had a little time to get some more things done to the waggy.
The first order of business today was replacing the old engine oil. I replaced the oil with some synthetic 10w40 made by Mobile 1. I also replaced the oil and fuel filters, I replaced those with Wix filters. While I was at it, the carburetor to intake manifold gaskets were replaced.

The ignition system was up next to see some upgrades. The old cap and rotor was well past its due date, the spark plugs and wires were also well worn. I replaced the stock distributor cap and rotor with parts from a 1979 Ford F350. The Ford uses a better designed cap and rotor then the Wagoneer came with. Parts for this upgrade included a distributor spacer, distributor cap, plug wires, and distributor rotor. I also replaced the spark plugs with NGK V-Power plugs.

After all that work was finished it was time to start working on the electrical side of things. The waggy didn't have a battery when I picked it up, so I decided to pick up a battery at Wal-mart. Wal-mart carries a MAXX Power battery that comes with a 3 year warranty. Being the over achiever I am, I decided to pick up a 1000 cranking amp battery. Its heavy, large, and heavy, but with a 3 year free replacement warranty, you can't go wrong. I didn't even measure to make sure this thing would fit before I purchased it, when I installed it today I had about 1/4″ of clearance around the battery. Luckily I was able to tighten it down really well and it doesn't slide around.

While I was in there I noticed the battery cables were appalling. I was afraid with all this new found power from the larger battery the Jeep would catch on fire and blow up. I decided to make some new battery cables. I had some 0/1 gauge welding cable left over from another project. I picked up some lugs and used some heat from a blow torch to solder the cables to the lugs. I just need to pick up some grounding straps to attach the body to the battery.

That's it for today.

not much to report.

i plugged off all the air injection crap on the exhaust manifolds with some 9/16ths NF bolts.

I cranked over the engine to see if i could get any oil pressure to register on the stock gauge on the dash. after a few minutes my oil pressure came up to 40 psi.:smiley_drive::victory:

things are looking really good on the motor now.:victory:

Next up will be getting the carb all hooked up, and installing my 30 gallon suburban fuel tank behind the rear axle. I'll also be pulling the stock gas tank and throwing it away. there is a huge dent in it and a hole in the top of it!:wings:
