Fun with military tires on an 80...

I went big on top...so I needed to even out the bottom.

I got them all mounted today...

"Recommended" rim according to the Military specs is 9" wide, but they fit on the factory Lexus wheels.

They sing a nice song on the highway, and surprisingly no death wobble. They couldn't fit these on the balancing machine, but Ive had them up 65 so far (or whatever actual speed Im going with no speedo correction over stock) with no shaking.

Just J springs, L shocks.......Mr Gasket rubber spacer in front.

Tires are 325/85 R16 Michelin XML steel sidewalled tires. (38.7" diameter)

They're my new tires...I'll have some bodylift and have to tweak things to perfect the setup, but I love 'em.

It sounds like 4 little airplanes flying near my car at any speed above 25...lol.

Holly tires!

Wow those are some huge tires. I'll guess that you can't get full flex with those meats on. What are your plans for suspension mods, if any?

Cheers ,

It instantly rubbed with a SLIGHT turn of the wheel on the front bumper endcaps, so they were removed.

With a 3/4 turn, they rubbed in the back of the front wheel well, so a BFH cleared that for me.

If I turn to full lock to the right it will just touch the exhaust in the front right wheel well, so I'll either tap in the exhaust a bit there or just not fully lock the wheel, which still gives me an excellent turning circle.

If I add to the suspension without longer control arms, it will just pull the wheels to the center and probably rub more.

I think my first route will be a 2-3" bodylift.

Here's my $0.02,

Welcome to big tire land where you're going to have to spend a grip of money to make it work 'properly'.

I think you would be building your rig all wrong if you did spacers.

Dude, you need to pay more attention to other things... the size of your tire doesn't make you the king of all!

Just like Christo Slee said on the mud board... you need to do axle upgrades, gears, lockers (you're open i believe?) and upgrade the birfs to longfields. Even then... you'll still break. You also need to get that thing up there in the air more WITHOUT doing a body lift.. (body lifts are nasty dude!) and you might want to ditch the skyscrapper tent now. It's going to be waaay too high. Not to mention you need to bring the spare down now with a full size. There's no way you can have a 38 up top anymore. Lastly you need to change the wheels out and get a proper backspaced wheel on that rig. They're going to be way too tucked to work good. I would NEVER consider taking a BFH to my down pipe!!!

Personally i think your rig was fine the way it was... but im over the 'bigger is better' idea.

You have a ton of work ahead of you bro. Keep us posted!!!!!!!

They are huge for a toyota, whats the unsprung weight like, are you worried about the drive train spinning those things?

Oh yeah, I got you beat by nearly 10 inches and mine don't rub!

I did some "trimming" today...

I trimmed off the bumper....

I trimmed off the LX flares...

With my 1.5" wheel spacers on, the tires now stick out 3.5" in the front and 4.5" in the back (due to no adjustable panhards yet to even them out)

As far as weight goes....the tires when shipped to me were just plain tires with a label attached.

Each package was listed on FedEx as 116lbs.
