Fuso Performance Chip.2

OK, I thought I had resolved this question [Is there a valid and effective performance chip for the Fuso FM260?], but now I find a small crack of uncertainty creeping in.

I just found this on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007...Accessories&hash=item4aa31ae558#ht_5395wt_909

They sure claim it is specific to the FM260, but here is the earlier correspondence:

On 7/20/2010, I had the following exchange with Volo Performance:

John to Volo Performance
I have a 2007 Mitubishi Fuso FM 260 with an 6M60 SOHC intercooled I-6 turbo-diesel engine. Do you make a chip for this engine? If not, do you know anyone who does?

Volo Performance to John [7 hrs later]:
We do not have chips for commercial trucks , semi's, big rigs, or 18 wheelers. It is being worked on for in the future sometime. We do not know who else may have one. Thanks.

Does anyone know anything about this company and/or their chips? When I went to their site [above] there is no indication of anything for any Fuso at all.

I can only assume that with not a single reply after 3 days and 129 'views' of this thread, that no one has any information to contribute. This is perfectly OK with me — I cannot find out anything about Volo either.

I just wanted to tie something off if I could.

Hi John.

Nothing really to add but I seem to remember talking to Dan Ruops about 9 months ago or more regarding a chip for his FM. I'm sure you would know him or at least know of him. Do you know how he got on? I think he was trying to get hold of a DPchip from here in Australia but last I heard , he was having some issues with the agent he was dealing with and I don't exactly know the outcome.

Dan's a real gentleman.....I am positive he would help you if he is able to. Why not drop him a line? Please let me know if you can't reach him via a PM here on ExPo.

Regards John.

John

I do indeed know Dan, and have talked with him recently. He did acquire a DPChip, and reported to me that his subjective impression of the chip was "modest at best." So, I was still hoping to find something more effective.

The chap from New Zealand whose Fuso was parked in the exhibits area of the Expo this year (2013) said that he had driven his thousands of miles from Queensland to Vladivostok, to here, there, and everywhere, said his chip increased the hp (torque?) at his rear wheel from 75 to 100 and that shifting was greatly improved (by this I suspect he means that he needn't resort to the lowest gear to start off on slightly too steep inclines). I did not get his name. Anyone else talk to him and get more details?

No, he probably meant that he had to down shift less on hills. Starting off in the wrong gear is just bad for the clutch.

All of the after market chips should give you more power, but it's how they do it which should be the determining factor when looking at getting one of these.
Most increase the rail pressure in order to get more fuel into the engine, but personally I do not believe that this is the best approach (and all of the diesel mechanics I have spoken with agree). Another method is to extend the injector duration, which achieves the same thing, but it does not stress any of the engine components. I know which method I would use...

Steinbauer is the only chip we use and recommend, so many problems with common rail diesels these days the last thing you want is to put more stress on the system.

Are you guys saying there is a chip available now for these trucks? What about the early turbo spool up set up, cant remember what it was called but I think Alan or someone put a link about it on expo somewhere, that was a bit more complex to install too so not sure about feasability.

I do not know if Steinbauer do a chip specifically for the FG140, but they do for the FG84D.
I would think that this chip kit would work fine on a FG140, given that they are the same engine and ECU. Finding out if the ECU mapping is the same would be the challenge.
Quite a few other companies also do chip kits for the FG84D, but as I mentioned, these kits all involve increasing rail pressure to get extra fuel to the engine.

Does Steinbauer have a presence in North America?

Stienbauer does have a presense in NA but they do not do a chip for the FG.

They have a location in Charlotte North Carolina

I've wondered if there is a larger turbo and jake brake that can be installed on the fg140.
Anyone try this?

A larger turbo seems feasable, the one in there seems pretty small, but I for one would not like a jake brake, the vac brake works well for me and is quiet, the jake brakes I know of are very loud and the use of them are banned in many areas, maybe some new technology is out now for that which I think it is but a jake brake to me is old tech??

I sort of remember the topic that I referred to about early spool up and if I remember right it was to have the turbo already spooled up but have a waste gate kind of thing that spills the boost out until needed, then when trying to accelerate at low RPM's the waste gate closes and you have boost......................man that was a bad description! that to me seems like a good idea when I read about it but there was some trial and error involved in setting it up. Any one have more info on that as it seems like we dont have a chip option.

There is probably no reason, other than cost, that you could not put one of the Steinbauer kits for the FG84D on a FG140. Unless the ECU mapping is significantly different between the AU and US models there is no reason it should not do the same job.

I do not know the efficiency differences between a Jake Brake and the butterfly assembly that is used in the Canter. They are both forms of exhaust brake, but as Westyss has mentioned, the butterfly assembly is definitely quieter in its operation.

The FM260 series also has a 'butterfly' exhaust brake. It is very well-mannered in its operation - al least on my rig.

However, I almost lost it completely one morning last summer in the Yukon. I had been off pavement and on rough roads for several days, and as I pulled onto the pavement one morning I suddenly was serenaded by a very loud exhaust noise. After pulling over I found the entire exhaust brake hanging by the air line completely out from between the two sections of exhaust pipe. Fortunately a couple of bolts I had on board got me to Whitehorse, where I could source some more. Seemingly no harm done, as I am nearly 20,000 miles later with no discernible ill effects.

Another wholly unanticipated result of rough road travel was to find that my cylindrical fuel tanks were rotating. The filler cap on the outside of both tanks was rotating up toward the underside of the house — making it increasingly difficult and then impossible to fit a fill nozzle into the hole when stopped at a gas station. I had to loosen the bands and rotate them back down before tightening them up really well. [I was shown how to do this by a local contractor who told me that it happens all the time to cylindrical-shaped tanks when operating on rough roads. After I got home, I slipped some rubber strips between the bands and the tanks before retightening. They don't seem to rotate at all now. I also put small strips of marker tape on the tanks and bands so I can detect any rotation early on.

Just two more unanticipated things to check on regularly — after I learned about them. Getting to be a pretty long list.
