I would reserve the home built alcohol stove as a backup rather than a primary stove. Denatured alcohol does not burn well over 11,000 feet or at temperatures below 20 degrees F (but these are not typical situations for most of us). Maybe Vodka does better? :ylsmoke: The are very nice commercial versions of the alcohol stove available but I think knowing how to build one from common materials is more useful. I did not know that the newer stoves could burn more than one fuel. I have not had any issues with mine although it is a little slower than my pocket rocket was but uses less fuel to accomplish the same outcome, ex. boiling water. I also don't have either of those situations but that is good information to have and may consider changing stoves for winter.

I was researching the commercial variants of the alcohol stoves and there are some really nice ones available for purchase.

This is whats more or less normally in my F250 PSD. Next time I refresh everything (around daylight savings time) I really should take pictures. Checking and repacking everything is a multi-day evolution, taking pictures will probably add another day to it.

BTW, having detailed inventory/inspection lists saved my bacon once when my old truck was stolen. Farmers insurance was quite accommodating about all the stuff I had in it after I showed them several years inventory sheets and tax deductions for the rescue stuff stolen - the only things they didn't give me full replacement value on were my hand tools (which struck me as odd, since they were craftsman, with full replacement warranty).

Considering the truck was stolen on Christmas eve with a load of presents for folks at work, suits and other clothes to go to the cleaners, etc and they paid on all of that, I called it good.

For trips we add and remove as appropriate. These days most of our trips are pulling a trailer (5th wheel toy hauler) so we have the room. I'll probably be buying a new F450 DRW tow vehicle (if the new engine proves OK, after a year or so) to tow a bigger 5th wheel trailer. It'll be equipped pretty much the same as this. My Excursion and Yukon are very similarly equipped, and my wife's daily driver (300SD) has a pretty good assortment too

Kind of last chance / bailout. It's just for us, with good knots we don't really need the 15:1 NFPA safety margin :) And with a good descender (and a double wrap) it's not hard to control.

We actually rapped off of a similar piece (which we have re-purposed to non-life support applications) just to try it. It was twanging in interesting ways, but no indication of core failure.

And we do use the Escape-8! Good call.

Quite a while back I had an MSR Sweetwater pump-syle water filter that was mil issue in OD Green and black as opposed to the civilian version in white and red. MSR has long touted their ties with the military and every so often we'll see some mil-issue items that are similar to commercially available items.
