General Competition Grabber Finally Gets DOT Love

Depending on how much you've been connected in the rallying and baja side of things you may have been lusting after these for quite some time. Their popularity increased dramatically when Toyota's Fifth Generation 4Runner made its debut in the Baja 1000 sporting a fresh set and finishing second in the stock mini class. The concept of a DOT approved version of the Competition Grabber was first discussed at the SEMA convention November 2008 and I've been on this bandwagon for nearly as long. The design is nearly identical to its competition only tire with only slight augmentations in adapting it for DOT approval.

So they're finally here, but due to exclusivity arrangements you're going to have to visit 4 Wheel Parts if you're wanting a set before the end of summer. I have a set being installed this coming Saturday. Until then enjoy some scans from corporate that provides a little insight and a good picture of it. I'll be sure to get a proper review when they're on and settled.

Product description from 4 Wheel Parts website
The new off-road addition to the Grabber family, the General Grabber DOT-approved off-road tire comes in a variety of sizes and is designed to perform on the highway and streets as well is engineered with rugged good looks and race-proven performance. A tough, three-ply reinforced body construction and a race-proven Duragen tread compound is designed to stand up to the rigors of off-road as well as highway conditions. General Grabber’s optimized tread design and multiple tread edges work to deliver great side bite and lateral traction. General has engineered the Grabber with what it calls AMST – Acoustic Modulation Sound Technology – a sound wave suppression technology that works to reduce road tires noise. The Grabber DOT-approved off-road tire comes in a variety of sizes and is designed to perform on the highway and streets as well.

Nice! I like those a lot and might have to look at a set of 32's when my BFG ATs are done in the next 6 months or so.

Any idea on available sizes and pricing?

Prices were in that 4wheel parts magazine. If I remeber correctly they were priced comparable to BFG ATs (315/75r16 size)

Them is sweet tires, but yawn and sigh at the tire size options. Too bad.

This is likely an introductory list to judge demand, I'm sure the less popular sizes will be accounted for in the future.

I believe these are snowflake rated, can't guarantee that until I see them. Petersen's and others have tested them in deep snow and reported exceptional results.

I'm not judging the quality of the tire, I had some amazing miles on the Grabber HTS and sold 'em strong on CL.

Anyway, I just wish someone would depart the norm and bring in some different sized tires. I know there are some mud boggin' wide-tread-lovin' folks out there as well as the pizza cutter folks like the majority of us here, but yet they can't seem to make >70% aspect on 18" wheels? At least they have 275/70r18s...

Based out of Fort Mill, SC.

Yeah the sizeds are a bit limited but the fact that its been out a few days and only one store will carry them for the first 3 months means limited selection. Business sometimes can get in the way of doing business and this is a prime example. Lucky for me the size was available and in the preferred load range.

I have heard concerns on other boards about respective load ranges as well. Since Toyota is synonymous with mid-sized the E load range may deter possible customers in the 265/75 16 and 285/75 16 variants. I have a feeling this tire is going to do very well, if that's the case we're likely to see expansion of the current offerings. Anyways, I've sent word to their office about what's been said so far, I'll keep you updated with anything that may come of it.

Wow, went to General Tires website, looks like they are very heavy tires. For comparison, a typical 315/75/16 tire is 64-70 lbs, the Grabbers are 79 lbs each.
