Glow plug question

I haven't seen the glow plug light come on in my 99 FG. How do the glow plugs function on this engine? Should they be coming on every time I start it? I don't have an FSM so don't know how to diagnose any problems that might be there. On my Mercedes, one bad glow plug will typically cause the glow plug light to go out. Does something similar happen with the FG?
Engine always starts right up, but winter is approaching and I want to make sure I'm prepared.

On my FG the light comes on only when it is colder, there must be temperature sensor that will call for glow plugs when needed.

glow plug light

I have never seen the light come on and when I bought the truck Darrin said he never saw it come on either.

On my FG it never comes on either. Except just before starting the engine when all the lights on the dashboard can be seen. From the instruction book I understand that like most modern diesel engines glowing is only needed when the truck is in a cold environment.

Our coldest night so far was 14.5F / -9.7C.

I did not notice the glow plug icon the next morning, but I was not looking for it. The truck started normally.

In looking at my manual, I see there is a high amperage strip fuse in the glow system. It's located on top of the starter on the relay(?) that operates the glow plugs between two studs.

I started my 93 FG the other day when it was in the 20s F.

The glowplug light came on.

The manual says I should wait until it goes off and the crank the motor.
