Good Luck Trying to Trade In Your ‘22-23 Tundra ☹️

So, we've seen 1 of these so far. The dealer 80 miles has had 3. Two other dealers in the same vicinity havent had any. For the repair part we replaced the short block, (Toyota does not offer a long block or complete engine) VVTI gears, chains, turbos and I forget what else. It was a big repair that was down for a couple months due to parts availability. We havent been told what the recall will consist of yet. Many times the public know before or about the same time as the dealer. It is pretty unfortunate, but Toyota will get it worked out. It's very rare for them to have a concern such as this. Really not looking forward to it at this time. We'll see what it consists of and how many hours it will pay. Warranty pay is usually about 1/4 to 1/3 of retail and in most cases is way short of what the job actually takes. Recalls are usually better if there enough of them to get a good pattern down and become repetition. It will be interesting for sure.

I've not seen a description of what is different about the hybrid variation and why they aren't having problems, perhaps they are manufactured differently and/or separately?
I will wait a few years to get a newly designed vehicle&engine and a big fan of the early adopters who bravely buy these things and help figure out all the problems. Toyota will likely make things right but might have rough seas ahead amid economy/auto market drama.
Honest question: are they not having problems, or just not included in the saftey recall - maybe because you could still drive the vehicle for some distance (out of harm's way) on the battery when the ICE explodes? Pretty sure I've heard of Sequoias (which are hybrids) with the same main bearing failure problem.

neighbor is following this pretty closely... there are reports of at least 1 hybrid losing an engine....
EDIT: and I think you're correct re: them not being in the recall because they are still "motive" via battery.

Here's a public spreadsheet tracking just the Tundra failures from one of the Tundra forums. This is just self reported info from people on the forum, so it's clearly only a sliver of the hundreds of total Tundra failures. I've also seen reported failures in at least one Sequoia somewhere, but I can't find it now.

I wonder if Toyota puts Magnusson-Moss on the stand... asking about modifications is interesting (to me).

What is the source of the problem with Toyota parts availability?

Meh. All trucks have issues. Pick your poison and buy whatever you like.

Curious what the fail rate is vs trucks sold.

I get the internet hype thing. I have the LC8 engine in my motorcycle and apparently if I breathe on it wrong, the cams will fail and cause my bike to launch us into orbit. When I first got it and posted about it on another forum, one of the first replies was, read the XXX group on FB, you'll list it for sale tonight and be happy if you get 50% of what you paid. Ain't the internet grand?

I get what you’re saying in general.

But in these cases? If you’re trading it in because you have no confidence in its reliability, feel you got suckered when you bought it…and have been told no fix is forthcoming, yeah, I would feel sorry for you.

That scenario truly sucks!
It’s a very isolated situation

Apples to oranges...but a few years ago my Tacoma had extensive frame rust in an area...apparently a design fault not allowing proper draining/ventilation in this section. There was a recall from Toyota about this and they replaced the entire frame on my truck. Two days in the dealer and done, provided a loaner car. I can only imagine what the cost was to Toyota for this recall program.

I hope the spirit of customer service I had then continues to this nightmare for the Tundra folks.

It's also a sliver of folks that have problems vs the hundreds of them out there without problems....info via forums is always a very vocal group of folks with issues I've found. There been a few times I've chatted to seasoned folks in the "real world" and mentioned issues or concerns I've read about online and they said they've never heard of it, had an issue and never heard of the issue even though it's plastered all over the internet.

I also think some things gain momentum online that are in reality either not true or misconstrued. A good example is a tire that comes on KTM motorcycles stock, called the Dunlop AT81. When the tire first came out people loved it, KTM started putting it on the bikes from the factory, people started hating it and any/all new riders you talk to instantly say the tire is junk. It's just fine and works great IMO and is 100% fine for a newer rider. Word of mouth, folklore, rumor, etc. It's funny.

Big moment for Toyota on how they handle this. I feel like they'll make it right in the long run but this also feels very 6.0 Ford Diesel motor in the long run.

I feel bad for the truck owners.
