I've always liked that color. Congrats on the purchase.

Yup thats a great colour. There's a guy on here with a red reg cab has a rtt on a cage in the bed and stores stuff in totes underneath. Probably my fav reg cab.

I always thought 235/85R16 look sexy on those

Yeah, I always liked this color too, I've had 4 different trucks in this similar tone. It hides dirt and scratches pretty good.

The tires on it are 265/75/16 Dunlop Rover HT's, which are great for the road, but they'll be too slippery for anything off pavement. I've got some old 235/85/16's that I've been keeping around as spares, so I might pick up a couple of junkyard Toyota wheels and mount those 235's to see how I like them before I buy new tires. I've always been a fan of steel wheels, due to their strength and simple design, but I've found a set of 16" Aluminum Tacoma wheels that I might pick up since they are cheap. I also think that swapping the steel wheels for aluminum versions would be good to reduce the rotating weight of the wheels. Once I decide on the tires size (either the 235/85/16 or the 265/75/16) I'll have a set of highway tires, and a set of all terrains. I would like to go up to a 255/85/16, or a 285/75/16, but I think it would need to be regeared and I really don't want to bother with that. I still need to find out what the current gear ratio is.

I'm thinking about doing a 2-3" lift in the front, and a 1.5-2" lift in the rear, just to level it out and get a bit more clearance. I see so many options out there, but I don't know which way to go yet. I definitely need to keep it well mannered and prefer that it rides as good as stock or better. With a wheelbase this short, I don't want a rough and bouncy suspension on my daily commute.

NIce Taco. I had a black 99 reg cab. LOVED that truck!!..Unfortunately it went to the Great Scrapyard in the Sky under the buy-back, at only 90K miles.. :(

Anyway, I replaced it with a '00 Tundra. I recently picked up a set of '05-'12 Tacoma steelies to replace the fugly 5-star alloy rims. I was gonna go with the 16-hols steelies, and even bought one, but then I came across the 5-star steelies, and they were a better deal.
I got 4 of these for $244 shipped to my door:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Taco...Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c306e1c2b&vxp=mtr

They are supposedly dealer take-offs, so they are very clean.
I got a set of 255/85-16 Maxxis Bighorns on them. I dont like the center caps that go with them, so I'm deciding on which old skool caps I will eventually go with.
These are the caps that are supposed to go with them:

Here's what it looked like with the stock Tundra wheel on the front, stock 99 Tacoma (I LOVED those rims, and would have used those, but being 15", they wouldnt fit the front of the Tundie),
with 265/75's. (Dont mind the Cali lean..Its sitting on a slight incline, and I also havent levelled the rear yet..)

Here's with the new steelies and tires:

And with center caps from the early 90's 4-spoke alloy rims, that are my first choice in caps:

I have a few other sets of center caps from the FJ60's and mid-90's PU/Tacomas I'm considering.

And as to suspension, I went with Tacoma OME 885 coils, with Bilstein 5100s all around. I'm considering going with the 3 leaf progressive AAL's from Wheeler's Offroad in the back.

Anyway, all this can be done on a Tacoma, so it might be something for you to consider.
Oh, and the OME coils, 4 5100's and front diff drop were only $599 shipped to my door from Wheeler's. IIRC, the OME coils were about $180. The 3 leaf AAL with Ubolts is only another $150 from them...So about $600 for 2.5" lift all the way around, if you re-use your stock coils.

Wow, I love those 5 spoke steelies!

I've seen a few sets of those on Craigslist for a good price, but I saw the 5-spoke aluminum wheels and figured they looked better. I might have to reconsider though. I don't care for the 3-spoke steelies on my truck, nor the aluminum 3-spoke wheels...I just dont like 3 spokes in general, but the 5-spokes look great. Those early center caps look perfect as well.

As for the lift, I still need to do more research, but thanks for the info, it gives me something to look into for sure.

Thanx!
Only thing with those center caps in the pic, they are for alloy rims...So they need another different, set of open center caps, and some modding to get them to work...
Yeah, Toyota's sense of style, as far as wheels go, in the 2000's is HORRIBLE!!

I'm thinking of painting those wheels either a light graphite, or battleship gray, like the old FJ40 steelies....Black has been over done, and not sure anything else would go good with the red truck... :(

Well, my laptop charger jack took a dirt nap, so I've been absent for a while. Well, I still cruised by here in my cell phone, but that gets old real quick. I took my computer apart and resoldered the power jackand somehow it actually worked! (I know nothing about computers) Anyway, I figured I'd post an update with the truck, and I guess this thread would be considered my "Build Thread" although it will be a very slow one. :coffeedrink:

So. The last time I was one here, I was asking about lift options and all that. The IRS screwed me out of some of my return, so I didn't order the lift parts, but they are next on the list. I'm going with Bilstein 5100's and OME 881's up front, and a set of new leafs out back. I picked up a set of '05+ Tacoma 5-spoke steelies, but after careful thought, I decided they wouldn't be best for me since they have a different offset and would suck the tires in. I already have rub issues on the inner framerails up front with the stock 3-spoke uglyass steelies and 265/75/16's and didn't want to run spacers. So I sold those wheels to a friend who has a TRD PreRunner and hates his aluminum 3-spokes. He's got skinnier tires and shouldn't have any rub issues.

So meanwhile, I ordered a shifter ball seat and socket from Marlin Crawler. After 10 days it finally showed up, and without hesitation, I yanked the shifter, cleaned the hell out of it, and installed the new ball seat and socket. WOW! What a damn difference. I feel like I'm driving a different vehicle. Smooth and precise shifting. No lag between shifts, it feels great. I highly suggest replacing your ball seat and socket with a new one or upgraded one if you have more than 100k on your truck. The new ball seat is Delrin and the new Socket is Nylon. The old rubber ball seat was some sort of plastic that was crumbled and brittle, the old socket wasn't bad, but I replaced it anyway.

So I painted my rear bumper with plastidip. This is temporary since I am building a new rear bumper, but I was sick of the scratched up and acid stained chrome bumper. So 20 minutes and half a can of black Plastidip later, and viola!

Then I posted a wanted ad on craigslist asking for a set of early Tundra 16x7 steelies. Got a few replies for overpriced wheels, then a deal fell into my lap. A set of 4 stock Tundra steelies wrapped in used BFG 265/75/16 All Terrain KO's for a song. I jumped on it and even got the open lug nuts and stock wheelcovers from the guy. I ran home and cleaned them up, but had to wait to install them the next day.

Hopefully I can make some progress on the bumpers, sliders, and bed rack soon.

I don't believe all the 4cyl TRDs came with the rear locker. Also lots of people throw TRD stickers on their bed, so make sure you actually check for the locker before you buy. I'd just go ARB anyway.

On the lift, I'd go OME all the way around. A lot of people have issues with the billies and OME coil mix. I know the billies are cheaper, but might as well get it right the first time.

Good score on the tundra wheels. I'm going to have to look into those, plus the shifter update you did.

Yeah, I'm still not 100% about the rear locker setup yet. I don't have the spare change for an ARB, but if I did, it would have already been ordered, maybe I'll start saving up. As for the 5100/881 combo, I've read mixed reviews, but then again, I've seen several folks who have identical setups yeilding different results. I'm not too worried. I hope to have the lift sorted out and installed by mid summer, not in any real rush.

Yeah the Tundra wheels are great, I prefer the simple stock wheels since I'm not one to try and impress anyone with fancy overpriced aftermarket stuff. That shifter seat rebuild was worth every one of those 2000 pennies and 20 minutes.

I'm currently on the hunt for some new seats. The stock bench is uncomfortable, has a ton of cigarette holes from the previous owner, and smells like sweaty farts. Looking for some stock Tacoma buckets & matching console. Does anyone know if the Access Cab doors are the same as the Reg Cab doors? My door panels have a ton of burn holes as well, I'll recover the cloth part if I can't find some decent ones.

I'm 98% sure that the door panels are interchangeable. Also, 4runner buckets are Almost a bolt in. I think 3 out of 4 bolts line up from what I've read while searching around in regards to bench swaps. I'd like to find some leather buckets, easier to clean and keep dog hair off of. Truck looks great!!!! I'll be watching to see how the lift and bumpers come out.

Cheers,
jorge
