Ground Tent vs. Trailer mounted RTT

Ok so I need some opinions , I would love to see what others think is better. Ground tent such as this one http://www.oztent.com.au or a Roof Tent mounted to a trailer. It's for my family of three , my wife and I and our son. Mainly we do week trips with alot of site seeing , biking exploring and of course some shopping for the wife. lol

Which do you guys prefer and why? What are the advantages of one over the other. Thanks for the help, always love the opinions I get from this site.

family = rtt if they can fit. kid will think its cool and the wife will like being off the ground. of course, ive always been of the opinion the only reason to put a an RTT on a trailer (m416), is if you are doing an extended stay where you have no choice but to go thru a technical trail, and you want to head out and about w/o the the trailer for a spell. otherwise, id just get a used pop up and and s/o the darn thing. the weight aint much more and theres a hell of allot more space. ive been thinking of doing just that. ive found small some late model jayco's for 3500.

RTT's are way cool, but i dont see them as the end all be all solution.

thanks for the input , I downsized from the popup reason being we like to go deeper into the trail to be able to enjoy the lack of civilization.

I really like the King Kamper trailer (Kimberly Kamper). It's rugged enough to get into remote back country areas with all the comforts of home. The way the tent/floor folds out, you don't have to worry too much about perfectly level and smooth ground like you would with pitching a ground tent. If you get into heavy rains the whole thing (like an RTT) is off the ground and water can flow underneath you if needed. Pretty sweet set up. Either a RTT or a good offroad flipout camping trailer are far more comfortable than ground pitched tents.

The Oztent is an awesome tent! I saw them (RV-3) while in Oz a few years ago and have been wanting to get one. I am going to be purchasing one of the technitops or OZ tents in the next few weeks. I just sent an email to oztent to find out about availability in the states. Urban Land cruisers had dered a few for themselves and to sell but David told me he was not going to reorder anyore since they didn't do it to get into the tent busnes but rather get them selves a few of the units. I'll let you know what I find out from Oztent when they reply.

I just contacted them last night and got a very quick response , being that there is no importer it has to come direct from OZ, the price to my door less import fee's was $1200 for an RV-3 including the rainfly and ground saver. So my dilemma now is cost vs. value because I can get the ARB RTT for $1500 locally.

So for now I'm leaning towards the RTT it has obvious advantages over the ground tent and the main disadvantage being cost is pretty much now irrelevant being that the OZ is so costly.

*Side note Kevin from urban cruiser just emailed me and says he has a rv-2 complete with rainfly and ground saver for $600 , which is a great deal but I need a RV-3.

I really have thoroughly enjoyed, even with the design issues I have mentioned on other threads, my RTT compared to 30+ years of camping on the ground. However just realize most RTT's (Maggiolina excepted) if mounted atop your vehicle will decrease fuel efficiency and create additional wind noise. If you are installing the RTT on a pull-behind trailer then it's not really an issue assuming the trailer sits more or less in the pull-vehicle's slip stream.

How will you carry your bikes and the RTT? And you don't state how old your son is...but if he is young will climbing up/down the ladder (maybe in the middle of the night) be an issue if it will be mounted atop your vehicle?

Just and FYI and 'food for thought'.
