Gun Safes

As seen in other gun threads, it is a good idea to have a safe in your home for your weapons.

I ran across this site earlier this morning.
http://www.patriotsafe.com/

I do not need a huge one, only one to hold a few rifles, a few handguns, and ammo and cleaning supplies.
I saw this one at a good price, and it is a one hour fire safe, and has a blue tactical LED light inside (wowwwwwww) :D
What is your opinion on this model?

Well, there are safes and then there are safes.

A gun safe is usually classified as a Residential Security Container. That means that it is designed to withstand 5 minutes of attack. The "fire rating" is the manufacturer's rating, not a UL rating.

I don't know much about safes, just what I've learned on the interwebs. Calguns.net thinks that Patriot safes are pretty good, but even the manufacturer admits this particular safe is built to a price point. That is a "keep the kids from shooting themselves" box. As long as you understand that, it is probalby fine. Do remember to bolt it down.

Price, weight and quality seem to be pretty closely linked in safe world.

If you can afford the extra money (about $1600 for their 60x30x21 model I think), and the space, I think the AmSec BF series is probably a better box (860 lbs). FWIW, they are much thicker because the walls are thicker, so it may not work for you. AmSec seems to have a very good reputation for warranty coverage.

Looks like a decent safe. I would google the company and see if anyone has any reviews / complaints about the product posted online.

Getting a safe is a great idea. The peace of mind knowing your stuff is secure while you are away from the home just can not be replaced. Before I got my safe I used to hide my guns all over the place before going on vacation in the interests of limiting my losses in the event of a burglary (which thankfully never happened). Now, everything hides in my Liberty Safe and I rest easy while away.

I will check more into this one and look for reviews.
I like the small size, as I have a small 2 bedroom apartment as of present.

Now my friends safe is more than double that size, and I am sure he paid $3K or so for it.
The rods that lock the door his has way more.
Not sure what brand his is, but it is top quality.

I do not need the best or biggest for my meager collection I have right now.
Can not bolt it down either where I live.
I do have monitored alarm system at my place, so the safe is more for peace of mind than anything.
More of a deterrent before neighbors or the police show up if my alarm goes off when I am not home.

With the weapons out of open view or where a thief thinks they may be hidden, it would take them to long to get into even this safe before someone was at my door finding out why the alarm was going off.

I bought a Liberty safe last year. I would recommend that you find out the size you really need, then buy the next size larger. One of my friends recommended this and I am glad that I did. Check out the video's regarding prying open the cheaper safes that you buy at Sam's Club / Costco / Home Depot...it is an eye opener.

Good advice. FWIW I have a Fort Knox safe and have been really happy with it.

That's a decent safe, but a bit overpriced.

The wife and I have been searching for a second safe (like someone mentioned, buy bigger than you need, if you can!)

We found a 24 gun that's similar, with the 3 'dead' bolts (hinge side) and 3 'live bolts' that lock the door shut. Retail is under $700.

The bigger safes are nice, but in order for somefolks to have one, it's not an option.

Like me, I need one I can get into my basement, that means under 300 pounds, and no more than 30" wide.

Or like Corey, who's in an apartment.

Check out Sentry Safes: http://www.sentrysafestore.com/sentrygunsafe.htm

But shop around, these prices are above MSRP (unless they include shipping, then it's not bad)

I'd stay away from the cheaper models from Stak-On. They are basically a wall locker with a better lock. A person wouldn't have to break into it, they could pick it up, or roll it away with a dolly:snorkel:

My friend threw me this link overnight, and they are local too.
http://www.nwsafe.com/

They were the movers who moved his safe from his home after a divorce, I will see what they have to offer too.

He also said to stay away from the digital pads and to stick with a combo lock.

Even a cheap safe is better than no safe. Best to put it in a corner of a closet and bolt it down.In as many directions as possible. Back, Bottom and at least one side. Position it so that clothing and such hides it. Tuck it into a corner so that the bad guys would have a heck of a time getting a prybar any where near the door and then build sheves to fill any space between it and other wall. All these things make it less obvious and harder for you to lose weapons. Bad guys are usually in a hurry. So anything to slow them down and make them work for it is a good thing.

No bolting it down where I live.
I looked at a bigger model at the site above, it is the Liberty Centurion 23.

I also found out that nwsafes is just up the road from where I live.
I will be taking a tour there this coming weekend to see what they offer, and also talk to them about what size they recommend for my place.

Kinda bummed though, these do not have the tactical blue LEDs in them :D
I will get the 110v kit installed though so I can have a humidifier in it, and possibly add a light.

I really like liberty safes. Great quality. They also will replace your safe free of charge if damaged during a fire or a break in.

Thanks Mark, that is great to know.

The regular Centurions are made in China, but the deluxe model like I posted above is made in America.
I hope to get there this weekend to view them, and place an order.
