I have a ft-2900r in the truck and a ft-270r for out of the truck.

The ft-270r holds a charge really well and has held up well to dirt and sand so far.

I love my FT-60. That factory antenna leaves a little to be desired, I replaced it with a pryme antenna and it works a lot better.

Just purchase the Yaesu FT 8800, so far it has performed well.

How difficult / confusing is it to use the cross band repeat on the 8800? I've been thinking about replacing my 2900, so I could extend the range of the FT-60 when I'm hunting.

I use it from time to time on mine...
Once you have everything all set up how you want it (operating freq, enc/dec selection, power level, etc.) , it's just a matter of going into the menu and selecting "XRPT" (I think it was) to put it into CBR mode.
To exit, simply push the menu button once (turning the radio off and back on again doesn't clear it I found out lol).
