Have you moved the OEM TJ/LJ subwoofer out of the center console?

The loudspeaker in the powered subwoofer in the center console in my LJ has disintegrated. I'm not much of an audiophile but the subwoofer seemed to improve the sound so I think its worth keeping. At the same time, its occupying most of the space in the center console so it would be nice if it was located somewhere else.

I took the subwoofer unit out the console and it appears to be just a loudspeaker and a small triangular shaped amplifier mounted to an equally triangular heatsink.

My question is this: is it reasonable to mount the amplifier and speaker outside of the center console in a discreet location where it wouldn't get in the way? Under the driver's seat would certainly be convenient if it would work, both physically and audio-ally.

Thanks in advance for your advice! :)

Cheers,
Graham

p.s. If you happen to have a full-size insert for the center console that you want to get rid of, let me know.

Most that I know have deleted the factory set up and moved a bass speaker to the rear of the Jeep to gain space in console along with better sound but anything is possible. I bet under the seat would work and if you do let us know how it sounds.

My Jeep was upgraded with a Rockford Fosgate Punch subwoofer in the stock enclosure, and ever since I rewired my iPod connector, it sounds surprisingly good. All of the speakers in the Jeep were upgraded, but all in the factory enclosures. There is a 200w amp driving the sub, and another 200x4 amp driving the rest of the speakers.

Debbie took the blown subwoofer to the local car audio shop and their experience with similarly afflicted Wranglers is the center console is the only convenient place for it; under the driver's seat doesn't sound any better than not having a subwoofer and the seat shakes. A new 6" speaker which fits in the existing enclosure is around $150. I'm half tempted to abandon the subwoofer in favor of more center console storage.

Don't abandon the subwoofer. Even though the factory speaker is not that great, the sound is much, much better with it installed. Trust me, I took mine out using the same line of reasoning and within a week I had put it back in.

I'm in the same boat, I really miss having that storage space in the console.
My CJ has an old Masterac console that holds a huge amount of stuff.
The LJ will barely hold a Kleenex and some change.

Ditch the center sub and upgrade all the other speakers to better quality. This should bring some of the mids & lows back that were lost from the sub removal. I'm not much of an audophile either, so the solution above would certainly suite my audio needs.
