Having Jerry Cans Relined?

I picked up a set of 4 nato jerry cans this weekend (2 water, 2 gas) and the water cans have a bit of rust on the inside. Anyone know of either a source to send the cans to or a method to clean them out and redo the lining myself so my fresh water doesn't get contaminated from the rust

I know on the gas ones, I would clean, patch and reline the same as gas tanks. Hirsch makes a decent one. As far as I know the old water cans were lined with enamel paint. Tan is what I have seen the most. I use to have a French military wine can (mini Jerry can) and even it had the same lining. You could line the insides with with pure bees wax.

Very good question and i've searched for a while on the web a few years back. Never got any perfect answers nor a company that would do it for me. I have several cans that i'd like to get 'rehabbed' and the best i heard was a solution and drop some chains inside and shake violently to beat up the rust and deposits.

I found these two products after doing some specific googling..

http://www.sscoatings.net/brewcoat-info.htm For those of us in the US
http://www.leighspaints.com/en/waterline.aspx and for those in the UK

Clean out the inside via some sort of media blasting or some other way to remove any pre-existing rust and then coat away..

That brew coat might just be what they used. Expensive if you are just doing 1 or 2 cans, but good water on the trail has it's own value when you need it.

Ask around. There is a local radiator shop I know of that will reseal a gas tank. I have a felling they can do a jerry can as well.

I wouldnt have a problem going to a radiator or gas tank shop and having them re-seal it if it were a jerry can I was using for fuel. Since this is something i want to put potable water in I'm not willing to trust whatever lining they would put inside a gas tank would be safe for water i want to drink..
