HDJ80 Expedition Build

I got a lot of inspiration for my Landcruiser 80 build browsing this forum so thought Id post pics of my own solution for a Lancruiser camper/pop top hybrid kind of thing!

Finished it a few weeks ago and its currently in a container on a ship heading to Cape Town for a trip into Namibia and Botswana

Essentially a Budutop roof tent on a regular rack but with a hole cut in the roof of the Landcruiser (strengthened of course) to convert it into a pop top design.

Do you use mostly the side door to get in and out of the cabin?

Yes I do you can see a little (Landrover) step I fabricated onto the side step.

I originally thought enter through the rear (!), but you have lots more headroom entering through the passenger door. You can crawl in through the rear (!!) if you want to though

Its all very compact, but no worse than a tent and you can stand up. We can also sit inside and cook and eat if necessary.

Excellent. Any shots of it with the pop top in its lowered position?

I only have an old photo when I had just put it on. Its been wrapped black and I have the storage box in the front now.

Thank confirms exactly why Im going with barn doors.

Are you able to sit inside with the top down?

Im 6' and can sit down with the trap doors down (head just touches). BUT, the bundutop has room inside even when shut so the trap doors can be opened slightly leaving 2-3 inches of clearance when Im sat down. Wife is fine, she's 5'2

So you are going 105 barn doors on the rear? I assume the entrance size will be the same as 100 tailgate. The passenger door has the same height but about 25cm lower point on the entrance.

Yes I found your thread as I look for ideas getting ready for a full remodel also.

Cool out of the box set up you have.
It would great if you posted your specs but for now I just ask (a lot) questions :)

Draw fridge?
Got water?
Fuel Range?
Got cabin heat?
Have you weighted your set up wet?

NP. Waeco CD30
70L fresh water with Nature Pure filter
15L Calorifier
Webasto Thermo Top heater (independent of engine) - supplies hot water and blown air heating
Fuel range - 150L - OEM main tank and OEM sub tank
Weight about 3000kgs fully laden

Sorry what I was saying about barn doors is that you still only have the same entrance space as regular tailgate. The passenger door is much easier to get in an out of.

The one kind of advantage of my setup is that the whole roof assembly can be removed in about 30 mins. And I have a aluminium cap I put on the apperture. Ideal when you want to go offroading without all the extra weight and height.
