what kind of MPG are you guys getting out of your 7.3s?

I have never gotten better than 15 that was with stock tires and wheels empty. Now I usually get around 13 or 15 empty 35 inch tires (doing 80 plus in the mountains I like to drive fast) Towing I get no worse than 10 usually 11 or 12.
2000 7.3 edge juice chip ( always run on towing) 4:10s 35 inch tires and of course a raised roof poptop. I played with my chip both empty and towing a load.
tow mode always gets better mpgs than stock or performance and the tranny runs cooler all the time in tow mode. Towing in stock mode to tow mode mpgs come up about 3 to 4 mpg tranny temps drop as much as 50 degrees however I know my tranny is on its last leg so that may not be true for a good tight transmission.

i read 18mpg and was impressed. But to be clear, your's is still currently 2WD? or did I miss the fix?

2wd, but with the diesel it should drop as much with the conversion as with the gas engine

I am glad I found this thread I am new to the forum and this is exactly what I was wanting to find on here... So I guess every one is just about on the same page when it comes to a 5.4? Even if you go with lower gears? The reason I am asking the only vans I can find local are 5.4's or 351's what would your choice be between the two choices?
The 5.4 and the v10 have known issues with the sparkplugs backing out,g shooting out of the head and damaging the threads. Not a good day when you gotta rethread the sparkplug holes in the head

I believe the "ejecting spark plug syndrome" was fixed at the factory around 2001, give or take. The later years have twice the threads and no problems. The biggest things as far as I can see on those is to use Motorcraft plugs, NOT use a thread lube and to Torque them to spec.
I really like my 5.4L. It does just fine on any hill in B.C., 6- 13% for 15 miles, pulling a 3,000# trailer @ 60MPH.
I would have bought a V10 if I could have found one that didn't have 400,000 miles and a thrashed interior. Clean low milage 5.4's are easy to find and therefore cheaper.

well, I have good news and bad news.
the bad: my wife got in an accident today. She's ok thank goodness, but her car isn't. So we need to replace her 4runner.
the good: i may have some $ left over to go towards my van
the bad: I still haven't sold my tacoma, so this van is still just a dream right now

more good news: I found a D60 locally for a good price. Hopefully I can pick it up today, then I'll be committed to this van thing. I thought that finding a D60 would be the toughest part.
