Help - Under-hood intake for 2010 Tacoma

Hi folks,

My friend Jim met someone at the Leavenworth Rally last year who mentioned an intake for the Tacoma that blocks off the intake by the wheel, and routes the air intake into the engine compartment itself.

Is anyone familiar with this intake? He doesn't want to put a snorkel on the truck, he doesn't like the look and doesn't want to cut any holes in it.

Any leads would be helpful.

I never understood this. Sucking hot air from the engine compartment, right off the exhaust manifold. Though I've seen worse, the in the front of the radiator (bug, rain, dirt collector intake) I can only imagine what a dog the vehicle would be stuck in summer traffic.
It's always been my understanding, the colder the air, the better.

It sounds like the CAI for a K&N Filter that draws air from the front and behind the PS headlight. That bypasses the OEM intake in the fender. Great way to ingest water if you ever do any fording - saw it happen on the Whipsaw trail. Took a while to get off the mountain and lost 3 additional trucks just to the recovery. It might be fine for the highway but a real disaster for off-road applications.

I've been trying to convince them to make a closed box for the 4cyl, it would work great for the snorkle.

I am not familiar with the mechanics of this truck, but Jim mentioned the intake is in the wheel well and he was concerned with it sucking in the dust kicked up by the front tires on long dusty road drives.

Is this not an issue?

Hmm... all the air intakes for Land Cruisers since the FJ60, FJC, and Tacomas have the air intake in the PS front fender which is routed to the air filter box. I don't think your friend needs to be worried.

If he really wants an intake system the TRD one uses the same inlet in the fender and is a closed box system. It has a cotton screen after the air filter to block any moisture/dust that may make its way past the air filter. Its a nice compromise between a Cold Air and the factory intake.I like mine, hope that helps.:sombrero:

Watch a truck in motion in the dirt. Most of the dust is cast behind the wheel as the vehicle moves forward. The hole in the Tacoma wheel well if pretty high above the tire. Yes dust will get picked up, but not much more then from inside the engine bay on a dusty trail. Ever looked at the inside of your engine bay after a dusty trip? It's almost as bad as the exterior. That's what air filters are for and why it is important to use a quality filter. If your buddy is worried about it, just change the stock airbox filter after dusty trips.
