Hikers self defense

I hope I didn't sound like I was smarting off, it was not my intent. For me personally I would feel better carrying a weapon even if there was almost no possibility of getting a shot off.
Scott, if you read the case studies, you'll find that not one of those nine people would have had a chance to use a firearm. As I mentioned, I carry a firearm when I'm hiking, but it's not for defense from cougars, because I know I won't need it. I think Vicreo started the thread because he genuinely wanted useful information, so I feel that pointing out simple statistics is useful. I do the same when threads go on and on about the best ammunition for "defense" against rattlesnakes.

Polar bears - now that's a different subject.

Not at all! I was just pointing out that there seem to be two distinct types of cougar encounters - the very few fatal attacks tend to be swift and decisive, with no time for the victim to react; most other encounters involve a young, inexperienced lion easily scared off without the need to shoot it (although that will probably be its fate anyway).

We don't expect trouble with drug smugglers when we hike near our house either, but as you said, being prepared is better.

Hi guy's well after talking to my wife, I got her to agree to order some stuff, like G fresh suggested, the order for a ruger 10/22 takedown alloy steel, http://www.ruger.com/products/1022Takedown/models.html

Cats are thin skinned- any buckshot should do the trick. If that were all I was worried about I'd want something with a higher pellet count like #2,3 or even 4 buck. For deer, pigs or social work any of the 0, 00, or 000 buck will work fine.

The problem is the caliber, and to be onest I prefer the shoot gun, I now how to use a firearm and rifle since I was a young, a wonde animals is more dangerous ( is what my grandfather told me) I have a 22/225 for more 15 year and only used for 1 deer some jabalí, with the shoot gun I will feel more comfortable.

CHECK THIS RIFLE OUT maybe what you looking for.

Good luck with your choices, and we hope you never have to use them!
Thanks Scott and I hope not get there

As many have suggested, you would have to have cat-like reflexes (pun intended) to draw down on a puma before it is on you.

Therefore, I suggest a hiking staff, solid wood, that can be used as a club and parry device. You might be able to keep it away from you until it gets discouraged. And a subcompact 9mm in case you do have a shot, but is small and light enough to hike with.
