Holy Grail Truck

Hi Chilli. We may get to test your theory about guys sleeping with their Cummins instead of their wives. It was suggested that I buy anything but a black 2nd gen with 5spd and flatdeck. Once she gets a good look at this beast, I may indeed be sleeping with it...

Price has yet to be finalized. I have left a deposit and will likely pay very close to his asking price. Given the number of people trying to buy it, and the amount of work done, and the fact that he is holding it for me while my buyers money is wired from Chile, I don't feel it fair to dicker too much. I'll offer maybe $5 below asking. Gotta get a "deal" after all!
I agree, if the guy is holding it for you and you want the truck(who would not:Wow1:??) then I say give him face value. I am just really happy you finally got the ride you wanted for so long.... P.S. let the misses hear the purr of that Cummins and she might fall in love with her too!:)

Ooooooh! Threesome? I doubt it. She loves a different animal. The common rail 5.9 '05-'07. I explained that it was not in our budget in the form of a lower mile and not flogged on rig. She will probably never love the '98.

Question please. Did 2nd gen 12 valves ever get the nv5600 ? I have had 2 2nd gen 24 valves with the nv5600 and loved them, never had a single issue with trucks that had a major boost in power. I did run a southbend clutch in those trucks.

No 5600s in the 12 valves. '98 was the last year for 12 valves and came with NV4500HD. NV5600s came as an option for '99 & '00. As of '01 they became they only manual you could get with a diesel.

Just curious Redthies, is it the simplicity of the 12 valve that interests you in that motor? P.S. I think you have better taste in rides then your misses!:ylsmoke:

I like the simplicity, durability, reliability and economy. Have you driven one Chilli? The way they make power is so nice too.

I love my 7.3 too. It makes gobs of power as well, but it is more "speed" power, whereas the 5.9 is more "grunt". The truck is arguably better overall, I love the look of the Ford too. But I don't like the look of the dually version of the Ford. I am not a brand loyal guy. I think that different brands make different things better.

With the manual you can install a Pacbrake which will double your stopping power easily. I had one on my '98.5 and they are the bomb.

We have a couple of first gen Dodge Cummins in the family and yes I love the bottom end torque. Are there any reasons why you prefer the 12 valve over the 24 valve Cummins?

Lack of computer controls is the main thing. You can get power out of either one fairly easily, but I am not interested in the costs to replace a VP44, put on a FASS, possibly change an ECU etc. There seems to be a lot of electronic related issues with the 24v trucks. To be fair, if this truck had come along with similar mods/improvements in a 24v, and had fresh injection and lift pumps, I would have been happy too. Just not nearly AS happy.

It's in the driveway!! Definitely more tractor than the F350, but serious fun to drive. When I was swapping plates (plates stay with driver, not vehicle here), I found a hole in the honeycomb grill insert. "Antlers" he said. Hmmmm, I said. Hour and a half later near dusk, I round a curve at around 60-65 mph and find myself entering into a small herd of deer. Brakes and Toyos seem to work as I slide/steer my way through. No fresh antler dings  I think the truck needs to be named "Bambi". Seems kinda fitting for a big all business black dually.

Stage 1 of the de-farkling has been completed. The visor, flares, mudflaps and bug deflectors have seen their last day on the truck. I have left the hood poops on for now, as I want to be ready to paint the hood if the poops take some paint with them. The flares held about ten pounds of dirt each, and as I suspected, hid some rust on the fender bottoms. Weld in panels will take care of it. Also threw in pics of the cleaned up truck, and the "Dodge farm".
