So, this raises the question... how can a Fuso/Isuzu that has been derated to 4.5 tonne run XZL tyres, and be legal, if the load rating of the rear axle does not change?
It is obviously possible, as many people do it. I would just like to know how you convince a person of authority that you are legal, should you be questioned on the side of the road.

Don't live in QLD:) no seriously it may be due the new vehicles going through SSM second stage manufacturing but i can 't be sure.

So Alan, in Vic when a truck is derated to 4.5 tonne is the rear axle capacity reduced as part of the reclassification?
If so, do you know what the load rating is reduced to?

Alan, the suspense is killing me!

Did you not get a chance to clarify the Canter derating issues with Vicroads as planned?

I'm sure there are many of us hanging out for the official response.

Just gone through derating my Canter in QLD it's now at 4,495.00 kg. Front and rear capacity are still at factory settings , you can't go over 4,495 GVM total which allows you to go to max on the front or rear then only to new max GVM. on the other axle. So tyre rating would still have to allow for max axle load. Dan.

mmm so if you have 1000kg on the front which is about normal, it leaves you 3,495kg for the rear, so you can never load the back to it's rated capacity, does this then mean srw rated at 1800kg each is ok?

No because in Qld the dont de rate your GCM proportionate to GVM so in reality you can still go 10.5 Tonne combined mass,
thats a lot of weight over the rear axle

If this is all true, then my original question still stands... how can you fit XZL tyres (or an equivalent) and still be legal?

This is mine FG637 2000 model , Front axle allowed 2360 kg , Rear axle allowed 3300 kg , GCM 7500 kg , these are vehicle specs. The vehicle now has a GVM 4495 kg . Alans wheels being at 1800 kg each make 3600kg per axle well above what I need even for the rear. When my GVM was 5500 kg and I was loaded to that my trailer could only be 2000 kg, now with my GVM at 4495 kg and I'm loaded my trailer can now be 3005 kg. I can never go over 3300 kg on the rear legal . SkiFreak :- I don't believe it can be done legally but I had heard that Oka had some sort of exemption because they were rated at higher carrying capacity at a slower speed. Dan.

I am still very interested to hear what Alan is told by the Victorian RTA.
I was under the assumption that when you derated a 6 tonne truck to 4.5 tonne that the allowed axle load would be changed on the mod plate to reflect the lower GVM. From what others have written, that does not seem to be the case, which surprises me.

If the axle load rating is not changed on a derated vehicle's mod plate, surely it still must have wheels/tyres that meet the original load requirement in order to be legal.
I am sure I am missing something, as many people run XZL's, and the like.

Two different guys in the Queensland Transport Modifications Team (I wasn't happy with the answer, so I rang twice) explained that its up to the manufacturer to define what the axle load ratings are and that QT wont touch it. If the NPS250 came with a different load rating from the factory they would have been happy to go with the lower rating, however the NPS250 has the same tyre placard as the NPS300.
I believe EC and the like are able to modify the axle load rating during the SSM (Secondary Stage Manufacturer) process and this how they get away with the reduced axle load and larger choice of wheels/tyres.
As it stands our 2002 NPS cannot use Alan's wheels in Queensland as 2 x 1800kg is well short of the 4480kg required, but it sounds like other vehicles like Aussie's FG637 will have no problems

And did QT comment on increasing the diameter of the 7.50 tyre as stated on the FG tyre placard? You still need to address that.
