Hood vent project!

Creative mod. :) Just curious, is it just a Montero issue with overheating? Never heard of this being an issue without a turbo.

No, not really...but any time you're in 4 Low, doing several miles of climbing or crawling in warm/summer weather, you're going to be working at the ragged edge (or just beyond) of the design envelope of the stock cooling system. This is why lots of off-roaders/racers install vents, electric fans, aftermarket fluid coolers, etc.

I've yet to have a cooling issue in mine, but I suspect the hood modifications have given me a bit of a higher ceiling temperature-wise.

pretty common in alot of the "tuning" world to lean the hood up on spacers like that to reduce temps. I can think of several hondas, miatas, and 240sx nissans that friends have driven over the years with the hood spacers.

Yeah...my Volvo has a (fairly) large turbo with the requisite FMIC, Calsonic (RX7 13B) fluid coolers, and a propped hood to help the heat escape. :)

+1 to that. creeping and crawling in low gear all day will make the nicest motor run hot (not necessarily overheating at all, but just hotter than normal). My Rover was hotter than the greatest depths of hell when I wheeled it hard in the summer heat all day. Never overheated, but I always let it sit with the hood open whenever we took a break to try and let the heat dissipate.

Right on...makes sense. :)

This **** is rad! Only thing I would have done differently is used carrage bolt instead of standard bolts. But that's neither here nor there.... If it looks stupid and it works; it's not stupid.

Haha...thanks man! :) It's fun and different, gets lots of looks. Whether that's good or bad, I can't say. But I like it. And hey, it's my truck. LOL! :) But yeah...much cooler in that first test. I'm gonna be testing it with thermoprobes next, and compare it to a stock vehicle, or just install a stock hood without a vent (or seal mine) to use as the "control group." I like data. :)

I added these to my Gen 1 hood and I can't believe how much heat comes out just at a idol.
Now I wish I had bought something larger.
