How much winch for a Disco?

I have heard this too. Can you run a dedicated pump with the Disco / MM combo? I would love to do that on my D2.

Yes. You can run a pump off the PTO on the transfer case. These aren't all that easy to find anymore. Maxidrive used to produce it. I think the website I linked in post 23 above can supply it now, or would know where to get it.

Winching with no alternator supply to a battery mostly urban legend.
I don't think anyone who's used electric winches to speak of will claim that you can do it much, but I have briefly, and also with a stock generator equipped land rover )which is almost like doing it without a charging supply LOL).
But yes, the reality is that it would right your vehicle and maybe get you to dry ground if you drown your engine.

My personal preference is hydraulic or mechanical PTO.

put this link up before

http://www.red-winches.com/

4x4 winches is now owned by http://www.firstfour.co.uk/

Peter Lamb who owns First Four is a top bloke and a very clever engineer. he does all the MM upgrade kit and also sells RED stuff.

Thanks for the links. Looks like great equipment.

One question. Looking at the First Four site I noticed that they say the gear driven PTO pump for the LT230 will work with Defenders, but not Discos. Any idea why this would be the case? Does it have to do with the engagement linkage into the cabin? Seems like there would be no problem on the transfer case end, since they are the same units for Defender and Disco, besides top gear ratios perhaps.

I honestly don't know - Give Peter an e-mail

As for the no alternator situation; years ago we used to teach people that htis was one of the strengths of the electric winch Vs Hydraulic/Mechanical. When MM first came to the UK shores the guy that ran 4x4 Winches believed in agressive marketing. I was lucky enought to be given an MM winch to use in competition and forbidden to make it quicker becuase the marketing stratedgy was based on the reliability/uber low ampage draw/strength thing. As part of the agressive stratedgy numerous "how crap are electric winches" challenges were set up for the press; all of which I had to be involved with.

I was gobsmacked to see how short a distance a well set up vehicle can actually winch on battery alone when the going gets tough.

Since then I have repeated the experiment - mainly for people I am teaching/training/appraising/assessing. All with different winches. It's how I got into the 'economy' type of winch

When I last interviewed the guys at RED, I raised the old argument/hot chestnut. Thats when the explained that they were in the process of bringing out a 5hp DC driven back up motor and pump that would sit in/on the tank - it would have maybe 20 to 30 mins of pumping...

That's when I knew I would one day need to sell my children to buy one of those winches

If you can get a copy of Land Rover Monthly in your neck of the woods, there's an article in this months mag about RED

It's funny you would bring this up. I was thinking as I read this thread that the ideal would be some sort of electric back up hydraulic pump to run the winch if the engine fails.

Thanks for the great info as usual!

Because there isn't enough clearance under the floor pan on the Disco. Another reason I added a body lift to mine. Still doesn't give enough clearance, but requires a lot less cutting to the body shell.

So Defenders must have a lot more room down there. How much extra is required?

Did you have no clearance problems with this setup or did you have to trim as well?

I'm running a RTE front bumper, have been since I brought the truck new. If memory serves me correct, I did have to trim the plastic grille for the winch, but that was 9 years ago...
