I have heard this too. Can you run a dedicated pump with the Disco / MM combo? I would love to do that on my D2.

I don't think anyone who's used electric winches to speak of will claim that you can do it much, but I have briefly, and also with a stock generator equipped land rover )which is almost like doing it without a charging supply LOL).Winching with no alternator supply to a battery mostly urban legend.
put this link up before

4x4 winches is now owned by http://www.firstfour.co.uk/
Peter Lamb who owns First Four is a top bloke and a very clever engineer. he does all the MM upgrade kit and also sells RED stuff.
When I last interviewed the guys at RED, I raised the old argument/hot chestnut. Thats when the explained that they were in the process of bringing out a 5hp DC driven back up motor and pump that would sit in/on the tank - it would have maybe 20 to 30 mins of pumping...
That's when I knew I would one day need to sell my children to buy one of those winches
If you can get a copy of Land Rover Monthly in your neck of the woods, there's an article in this months mag about RED
Because there isn't enough clearance under the floor pan on the Disco. Another reason I added a body lift to mine. Still doesn't give enough clearance, but requires a lot less cutting to the body shell. One question. Looking at the First Four site I noticed that they say the gear driven PTO pump for the LT230 will work with Defenders, but not Discos. Any idea why this would be the case?
Yeah, that's been my suggestion for a number of years. It's funny you would bring this up. I was thinking as I read this thread that the ideal would be some sort of electric back up hydraulic pump to run the winch if the engine fails.

I run my hydro MM off a ace pump on my D2...

Actually brought it up here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=250674&postcount=15
Did you have no clearance problems with this setup or did you have to trim as well?
I blame it on youthful indiscretions. LOLTom, did you just pull a flashback on us?
