How young is to young to start kids camping?

One of my early memories when I was probably only 4 years old was of our return from some camping destination. I don't remember where we went, but the distinct memory was me telling my family that I immediately wanted to go out on another vacation, and we were only a couple miles out from arriving at our home.

I did that too at age 6 just leaving 11 mile canyon outside Colorado springs. They promised me we would go back in 2 weeks and I could bring a friend. We did...one of my best childhood memories and we had a ball!

As early as possible, My girls 7 and 12 were around tents, canoes, camp fires, hiking, and biking as soon as they could walk.
They long for the outdoors and look forward to our trips. Nothing better than a weekend without distractions. Just the family, good food, conversations,
and the great outdoors.

My X and I took our oldest when he was only a few months old, and he slept in the tent trailer between us just fine on one of the beds.

My youngest (now 26 next month) I was taking him out when he was two.
At that age they love to help with the camping chores.

My son's mom and I always believed that you can take children anywhere you are willing to care for them, no matter their age. My brother and I were born on the road, while my parents traveled the US as guest musicians and speakers in churchs all over the country. We thought 4 months old was plenty old enough for our son's first 7 day primative camping trip to Lake Powell, UT in July '06.

The following Christmas of '06 we took him on his first trip to Cozumel, MX, at just 10 months old. On that trip to Mexico we were delayed for 3 days as the airport was snowed in and we actually ended up camping in the elevator terminal at the airport.

Since then he has been on countless of adventures and at 6 yrs old he has seen more of this country than most adults I know.

I just think if you are ready to take a child camping then your child is probably ready too!! Thats just my .02, but I just think it's awesome to see kids get the chance to be apart of the action.

No kids of my own but I"ve camped with plenty. Never minded it no matter the ages as long as the parents are attentive. Just remember, at some point in their teens they will no longer want to go camping with you. But that too changes.

I see folks saying, the sooner the better, and I agree. We took our daughter out when she was 7 months old. She was sleeping through the night by then so that definitely helped.

I worry about my 3 year old wandering over to a rock and seeing a cool new leg less lizard with a rattle on its tail to play with. He's at that age he listens 85% of the time.

Yeah, that could definately be a concern. With kids (and some adults), you have to be more aware of their surrounding than they are. We often camp by water, in areas with rattlesnakes, bears, mountain lions, and possibly wolves....(of course there was a mt. lion in my neighborhood this week, so it's not just when I'm camping.)

We just keep an eye on them, let them get just far enough away that they think they are getting away with whatever they are doing but we can still keep an eye on them.

We went camping when our daughter couldn't yet walk. That was a mistake, as crawling in the wild is not the best.

I would say once their walking...their camping.

Word...

At least for me, the answer depended more on me than the ages of the kids. My attitude and that of SWMBO mattered most. That is, we knew that things would be different than our childless camping and backpacking days. We made the adjustment and planned accordingly. If you're willing to care for them, be observant of potential dangers (without scaring yourself or your children), and still enjoy yourself, then any age will work. I took my kids very young, the youngest 6 weeks. The ages of their first trip had more to do with their birthdays than anything else.
