hydraulic winch options

Looking at what the options are for hydraulic winches. I've had a milemarker since 98 on the disco and though it still works like a horse, I'm looking for alternatives that are perhaps higher build quality. The setup is a PTO driven hydraulic pump, external oil reservoir, can do 3000PSI and 40GPM max and of course I have the ability to adjust the flow and pressure to suit the winch.

Looked at the ramsey and warn hydraulics, but only on the website. Anybody have any experiance with any of those? My number 1 criteria is ultimate reliabilty, it just better work, day in, day out.

so are you running a hydro mm on the D1? I'm running a hydro mm on my d2 and it's been nothing but dependable...

I saw a wrecker haul out a completely stuck full size rig with a Ramsey, the winch never hesitated. My superwinch(no longer on the rig) and another warn unit couldn't budge the stuck truck.

Very impressed with Ramsay winches.

Look for an H14 superwinch or the above recommendations. I have a PTO driven (shafts not hydraulic) Fairey which is what the H14 superwinch became and it is a beast.

michel, mongosd2:

Are you running your MM hydraulic winches from a modified power steering pump or a dedicated hydraulic pump/PTO?

I'd like to hear more details of your setups.

Thanks.

Same here, never left me stranded once. One time it was acting funny as hell, late in the night on rubicon but figured out later that when I put it back togheter from a cleaning before the trip I missed a washer so it would not engage properly and had to jimmy the lever. So not so much the winch. So im not looking around because of reliability, but it has been used heavy for 12 years. Also I never liked the metal casing, I got 8 bolts holding it in and still feel like it could fly off sometimes....

It's a dedicated pump/pto. A complete stand alone second system. Originally I had it on the power steering pump. worked, was weak and slow as molasses, but again alway's worked and got me out. That's when I got educated in the details of the rover power steering pump pressures and gpm and started looking for something more adequate for the job.

All their models look good (except the color :Wow1: )and solid. I can't find decent measurements on their site to see if I can fit them. I'll have to give them a call.

the ramsey I like quite a bit also, here I'd have to alter my winch mount as it bolts from the front/back and hangs down in the bumper leaving it a 'bit' vulnerable on some odd approaches, so I would need an extra plate to protect it.

The pierce indeed looks like king kong, if they had a 9K model version of the 15K recovery one they list it could be the ticket also.

lots to look into.

FWIW Scott E at Rockstomper swore by (not at!) his Pierce winch way, way back in the day.

I have owned a number of MM hydro's over the years (still have 2) and they are great winches and well within the strength requirement for a off road truck.

One of the things to keep in mind about winches is the overall weight of the set up. Many of the pierce or ramsey units are just plain stupid heavy and adding that much weight onto a small rover is a really poor idea as the added strength of the larger winch is not needed as the MM winch allready operates as a 100% duty cycle unit at the line pull ratings a 6000 lb truck requires.

Yeah, my RE10000 is pretty heavy. But I've always had a thing for worm drive. :victory:

I've heard of them, but never looked at them so no experience at all.
But to be honest, when the thing that gets top billing by a company is what software they use, I am inclined to look elsewhere.
That said, if I were in the market for a hydraulic winch I'd give them a look.
