I-6 or V8?

Do you guys know the outer diameter of the M1 209 filter? After searches online and phone calls, I have found larger filter solutions from Donaldson (P550400) and Fleetguard (Cummins LF3339). These filers have very similar physical attributes, Overall Diameter, gasket inner/outer diameter, but longer, which is good.

These filters (size) don’t a direct match that’s synthetic media. The closest I have some is a Donaldson P169071 which has an outer diameter of 3.67-in, and is 5.32-in. long. Fleetguard’s LF3487 has an outer diameter of 3.78-in and is 5.4-inches long. (The Donaldson’s is very close to my Toyota filter, with an O.D. of 2.85-in and I.D. of 2.47)

The question is, will the gaskets on these larger diameter filters fit and seal properly on the mounting surface. Hence my question, the outer diameter and more importantly, the inner/outer diameter measurements of the M1 209 filer’s gasket.

Thanks for the link to the ih8mud thread about the Mobil 1 oil analysis numbers, I just finally read it. Very impressive 12,000-miles and lots of idling!

After much searching for a commercial application, heavy-duty oil filter from Donaldson or Fleetguard with synthetic filtering media (or a blend) I came up empty. Lots of filters with regular cellulose media, but no synthetic media upgrades. Commercial application stuff is not always the best choice, but I gave it a hell of a try (web and technical support calls to Donaldson and Fleetguard).

Web searching and reading gave a few testimonials about the Mobil 1 M1-209 filter (in addition to the comments here) that convinced me to give the Mobil filter a try. I found them easily at my local Kragen/chain auto parts store for $9.99 each. I bought two. They also had the similar K&N, which I read is made by the same people for both Mobil and K&N, but the K&N was $11.99 and has the nut on the end for easy removal. I prefer the Mobil with normal end that also fits the end cap type filter wrench I already have. The only slightly negative thing I can say is that the ends of the filters are not sealed with plastic like the Toyota OEM and commercial filters I buy.

Now I'm looking forward to my next oil change and running more miles, probably 7,500-10,000. I have to decide if I'm going to send my oil to Blackstone, or to my local CAT lab that I have used in the past. I like all the written comments given in the examples in the ih8mud thread. In the past my local lab didn't write nearly as many words to help a layman interpret the analysis. Do you know if Blackstone accepts a new, baseline sample of the oil before you start testing with them? My Red Line 5w-30 is probably not a common oil?

Do what you are comfortable with, but you can read up on oil analysis results on bobistheoilguy.com and you will find good numbers on the Mobil 1 oil and filter changes at 10k.

Also, I am not using the small filter. The larger M209 filter fits fine, provides more filtering media, and has the same specifications as the smaller one.

I'm going to send in a sample at the next change and I'll let you know.

James,

I was going to say measure and make sure that filter fits your 4runner before you drain the oil. I think it does from memory. It works great with the motor, but I can't say 100% it physically fits the 4runner application, whereas I know it fits the 100 series.

The 20004s are nearly impossible to find last time I checked. Do you have any locations or sources for any?

I did some measuring because I was thinking of an even larger commercial filter, and the Mobil M1-209 will fit fine.

For the 20004's Contact Dan at american toyota. He was/ still is able to get them when he runs out of them. He has some special conections. You can contact him 800-432-6668. I have not recently talked to him as I have a case of these filters at home. But I know from past conversations he was planning to keep them in stock after fighting a battle to get them again.
I really do not want to get started on the difference of the two engines families. I personally like the 1FZ alot:jump: . later Robbie

V8 or I6?

I drive a 60 w/ a chev v8 conversion. Very expensive conversion in order to ensure reliability. If a person wants reliability, stay factory parts and toyota does the best job w/ long term reliability. An 80 series sound best. I know of an earlier model w/ 120k for $9000. Sounds like a jewel. I also would love to have my wife in a 62 stocker w/ lower than 100k. 100 series is a complex truck with a lot of gizmos and costs a lot up front. I would stray away from those even aas a mechanical type.

Welcome to ExPo Robbie! I got a 90915-YZZD3 today from Burt, which is made in Thailand with the plastic seal. If Dan's got 90915-20004, I gotta give him a call.

Although the complexity is correct, I would not let that deter someone from buying a 100 and overlanding with it. It has proven itself to be an EXTREMELY reliable Land Cruiser despite its "gizmos."
