I just fell in love with my Landcruiser again..

A huge step in the right direction, Dave. Tom Sheppard would approve.

Dave,
Definitely prefer the look "sans rack". Took my rack of the FJ first week I had it - no regrets.

Motto if it don't fit in the rig - it stays at home!

I just finished reading his article in Overland Journal's 2008 Gear Issue (Needed something to read while I wait on the summer issue) and that is definitely true. Mr. Sheppard was/is not a fan of roof racks!

On a side note, that is one great looking rig!

Personally I've never been a big fan of "expedition" type racks. They increase height, fuel usage, CofG, and noise. and make it harder to put canoes/kayaks/bikes etc on the roof. They do let you carry more junk, but an 80 is already pretty large inside (and weighs enough already!) so I too try to follow the idea of "fit it in or leave it behind". How much stuff do you really need to go camping?

Your 80 looks great with the clean roof!

What's the new "elegant piece of Overland equipment"?

I think Dave means his rig.....it new to him again. Or I could be a total tard....I'm sure its the latter.

I've been thinking the same lately. I havn't used my RTT since I got the Casita. May have to follow suit. But your rig always has looked RAD (yes I'm trying to bring it back):wings:

That's the same reasoning why I don't intend on getting a roof rack this time around.

Or if you do, just get something simple like the Thule/Yakima raingutter mounts and bars. They're on and off in 3 minutes, and you can still strap larger items up there. (I need to buy longer crossbars though!)

adventureduo, any info on the antenna mount installation in the middle of the roof? If i get a ham license that looks like a great place to mount the antenna.

It looks like a CB mag mounted antenna; a Wilson 1000. But that's just my guess from what I can partially see from the photo.

I do have a Yakima roof rack for my suby, the crossbars are most likely too short for the cruiser. I only put the roof rack on the suby when I go skiing or biking. Recently I've been lazy to put on and take off the roof rack so I just toss the bike into the wagon.

I was under the impression that it was a permanent through-the-roof type mount, but I'll wait and see.

The rack fits in the back of the truck and gets stored in the shed at home when I don't need it so my roof is always bare unless I'm actually carrying something on the rack.

The suby would have 48" bars, and the cruiser requires the next size up, 58". I have 66" bars on now and I'd like to get 78" ones in the future. The extra length would make it easier to carry more boats at once (I'm going for the record! :victory:). My brother has 2 bike trays on the roof of his Legacy, but since the cruiser is high and bikes are heavy I use the hitch for the bikes.

Simple and straight to the point.. no frills.

Says the guy with the two spare tires :sombrero:

My design view remains to add a trailer for all of the goodies so I am "crawler in the front, expedition in the back".

Kind of the opposite of a mullet if you think about it :coffeedrink:

Love your rig, just keep it loaded up and be who you are :D

Tom Sheppard would approve.

I've always wanted to ask Tom if he's ever taken a/his family on one of his long trips. I dislike roof racks likely more than the next fellow but they or their various incarnations are a necessary evil at times, and much better than a hitch wart on the back mandating removal every time you need access to your cargo.

And yes, I'm starting to become all about painting on a dingy on the back (trailer).
