Just bought 2 M416 trailers, sight unseen! Here is what great days are made of….

A friend was at an auction today and called me about a Diesel Ford that he might bid on. The diesel went to high and while I was on the phone he said "they are about to auction a military trailer". I said “what kind”, he said “no clue” and then I heard someone in the background say "M416"!! I yelled to my friend….BID, go BID!! This auction was very fast paced, so he ran over, just in time for the final bid. I could here the auctioneer say moving on now, who will start us out, gime 400, do I have 400….. Tom was silent for a moment. I said “Tom, can you here me”? This auction was out in farmland with very bad cell service. I said again “Tom, you still with me….Did you get a bid in on time". He said "yep, but I am not sure your going to like it". I thought, oh know, what have I just bought!! I just had him bid way too much for junk or they were really nice and I did not get them. So, good news, when my friend finally spoke up and said “you got them”. I said “them, you had high bid for ONE and took both”? He just said “Yep”. Toms not much for words. He then just said “160”. This is how he has fun, I guess. He finally explains that he got the first one for $80 and had choice for the second one!! So, $80 for the first M416 trailer!!! AND $80 for the second trailer!!

Just thought I would share the great day I had!! I am going over tomorrow to pick them up. I hope they are in ok shape. For $80, not sure what to expect??? I am not even sure what I will do with them. I have a M 116A2 tool trailer already. I will update later today (Sunday). I am going to try to go to sleep!!

Ditto on that!

Who cares for $80 each!

Guys have been paying $600 to $800 for rust buckets......I'm sure you scored big time!

Congrads!

GOt a question about these things. I can get one basically for free, it has some rust. is that rust fixable? Just curious? i may get it and build a fold out tent on top of it and a slide out grill/kitchen, ala a teardrop

absolutely - if its bad enough you can cut it out and weld in steel

POR 15 is another solution for painting the inside over the rust

Well I did not even bother going out today. The M 416’s are now at my friend’s farm about 32 miles away and it rained today. In Ohio that means MUD, and lots of it. Normally this would not be a big deal but I found out he drop a flat bed trailer off at the auction and they said they would load up everything he won. He would be back later to pick it up. Come to find out they thought it was OK to STACK them one on top of another!! Not sure how that going to work out?? Back to the mud. We will need to get the forklift out to unload the top one. Cannot do this with a forklift in the mud. So I will just go out on Monday.

I did have my friend look them over and he said that they both had paint flaking off real bad. But he could not see any rust holes at all. Just surface rust and all the tires hold air. He also said the tubs were fairly straight even being stacked on top of each other.

I unloaded (air lifted:)) the trailers and took some photos last night. Only problem is I shot them in raw format:oops: And I need to get to work to process them. Give me a few hours and I will post up some pictures.

And this was the air lift I was talking about. The fork lift was stuck in the mud!!

The one that was on top looks to be the better of the two. Here is a picture after we unloaded it.

M 416 #1
This one is the better of the two. It is not to bent up and no rust holes. The brake is locked up. No tail lights and the wires are cut in 2 places. 50 coats of paint. Overall, this one looks good. If it were sandblasted, it would look great.

Black cat showed up for good luck...I don't think it worked!

Can you see the water line in the tub from standing water?

M 416 #2

And M 416 #2
NOT as good as #1 but its all here to restore??

This one rolls around good. Brake seems to work. Is beat up pretty good and one small rust hole in the front lower right side (from standing water). Front is bent up were the hitch is. Tail lights smashed but wires are good. Fenders bent but can be fixed easy. 50 coats of paint!!

That black cat loves its new home!
