Insuring vans with plumbing/cooking as RVs

We are reassessing our car insurance now that the van build has progressed.

Progressive, our current insurer, can insure it at a stated value with the pop top , lift, and 4x4 conversion installed, but said if we add plumbing and cooking capabilities it will need to be insured as an RV. We're getting quotes to see how that would change the rates...and looking at other insurance companies.

Anyone know the best way to insure our rig? And not cost a fortune?

We have Progressive also. We insured our SMB as an RV with progressive and we pay about $40 a month which really isn't too bad I think. We insured the van for the price we paid as well as "possesions" in the van. This brought our coverage to a very comfortable level.

I would look at Thum insurance. They insured my EarthRoamer to replacement value for my trip to Panama. Great to work with and very knowledgeable on the requirements for international travel.

Good Sam's has done a great job for us insuring our new Sportsmobile and our big RV Bus. Very affordable and great service. I think they re-insure thru GMAC.

I'm insured as a van...never mentioned to them the fact that it is anything more. Insurance will try and wiggle out of paying anything anyway, especially when you start talking to them about custom work.

Usually, an RV is less expensive to insure than a daily driver....for that reason: a daily driver is driven daily. An RV is assumed to be driven a lot less.
Your liability and comprehensive/collision coverages is where the money goes. Review your policy carefully!

Time 2 on this. On the things I've had as RVs, the rates seemed cheap compared to the cars. Insurance on my Sprinter (RV) is significantly less than the ER XV-JP (truck), though they have similar values.

So to bring an old thread back....are people with conversions for campnig to the vans insuring them as rv's or ? What is the avg. $ of this ?

for better or worse...
State Farm is insuring our van conversion for purchase price + the mods (roof, awning, etc...) for $49mo. this is our second auto and used as a daily driver so there is that 10% multiple vehicle discount in there somewhere : )
