Hi all, we currently have a 97 limited 4runner and our family has pretty much out grown it. It's got 200,000 on it. I came across a 2002 limited sequoia 4wd with a 197,000 for 6,900. It's got a full life history of maintenance and repairs. Timing has been replaced twice. 2 owner vehicle. Here's the carfax. Thanks in advance

Everyone is going to have their own opinion.....but I have a 2004 with 158,900 on it. As long as the vehicle has been maintained properly as it looks like that it has been, I would not be to concerned. The 4.7 is bulletproof. This has not lived in the northern parts of the country which is good. I would have someone give the truck a in depth scan to make sure it does not have any issues that you cannot see. A pre-delivery inspection should run about $100 and would be money well spent.

I know that most on this site think that if it not a Land Cruiser it is not worth the money, but these trucks are very capable and you cannot dispute the interior size. Go for it.

I don't know a lot about Sequoias, but I've never been afraid of a few miles on any Toyota. Like MFoltz says, give it a once over, engine compression, check fluids, look for excessive rust and wear. About the only things I can add might be to be realistic about the goals for the truck. Nothing last forever, even Toyotas. At 200K you are always at a risk of something breaking and it might be something expensive. I would also maybe be a little concerned that for the first 3 years it was a corporate vehicle. Not sure what that might mean, someone's company car that got driven like a rental or maybe it part of a fleet that was impeccably maintained.

Bought a Sequoia new in 2002(?) for a family car. Great vehicle; drove the piss out of it for a long long time, gave it to one of our children when we didn't need that much vehicle any more. They're still driving it as their DD family car. Must have close to 300,000 miles on it by now; still doesn't leak or burn oil, still drives great. It has been well-maintained by myself and my son, but no major mechanical issues ever. Still on the original alternator, radiator, water pump, etc.

4.7 = bulletproof .

My folks still have a 2001 with 300,000 miles of commuting , grocery runs , towing .... And they're not exactly interested in things like maintenance and oil changes ..... I say go for it . And starting on 05' they bumped the 4.7 to 280 hp...

Another vote for proceeding. My 2002 Limited has 215,000 miles, and the truck is rock solid. I got mine through the local Lexus dealership, which is really good about sorting through the used cars (even the very used cars) to make sure they are safe and sound. And it is.

The only problem I had was that no one could determine whether the timing belt had been changed. The CarFax showed enough service history to show that the longtime owners had kept up with the maintenance, having regular services and spending all the money it took to keep it nice. But there was no mention of the 90 or 180K mile timing belt/water pump changes. I personally find it hard to believe they did, let's see, 120K/5K oil services = 24 times that they ignored the service writer saying to do the timing belt replacement, but with no evidence of even one, let alone two, replacements, I felt I better do it.

Expect the opening rear window to be flaky. That seems, seriously, the most frequent problem with the Gen One Trees. I'll bet most manufacturers would love to be able to say that about their 200K mile trucks.

That is funny you mention that Mike, the only issue that I have had since mile one is the back window going out. This just happened last month. I was thinking back, and this is truly the only item that has malfunctioned on my truck since 2004.

While the engine is unlikely to give you issues, all the little things could add up. Check the axles, seals, look for play in the u-joints. Bearings and such can be a bit costly to replace so it's good to know what you get into. Control arm bushings have a tendency to dry out, though that might be more of a western vehicle issue. Verify all the windows and controls function as they should.

Thanks for the replies gents! Now the wife is saying she doesn't want to part with the 4runner! I might end up having to let this one pass. Happy wife happy life

My wife's Tundra has 255K on the clock no problems minus the tailgate latch and passenger interior door handle. Have replacements for both and plan on replacing a O2 sensor.

These first gen Tundra/Sequoia seem to go on forever.

We have close to 158k on ours. Like others have said, the 4.7 is awesome. Great SUV!......and a blast to mod if you think outside the box :)

I have an 07 the engines if cared for do 350K before any major stuff needs to be done. The AT is pretty well done not really noted for having any sort of trouble. They are heavy and hard on front tires but good truck tires and rotating them on a regular basis seems to help keep things even on the tread. I like ours though its not perfect given the first owner got in an accident all factory toyota dealer rebuilt from radiator forward but pretty sure the drive line was tweaked given I have a vibration at higher speeds that are not tire related. Tempted to replace the drive line and guessing that will handle my minor complaint about the vibration. The engine and transmission are great very well done. Light throttle no roof rack gear and keeping speeds down you can get 18mpg averages on road trips. Though typical for us is 17mpg. Around town averages are like 15mpg. Its right at the max size regarding trail use you can get through tight spots but its right at the max size I would want to go. The 4x4 system is good gets the job done a rear locker would make it unstoppable but the rear end is an odd size so no easy aftermarket air locker kit unless the earlier models had a different sized rear end on them.

I had a 4runner way back in the day the Sequoia is a whole different ball game far more stable at highway speeds and far safer for the family etc. Its a nice truck. Its nothing like my cherry 93 Land cruiser I sold but its a really nice truck for the family.

My 2001 Big Tree with 142K looks and rides like it's new.

There are a lot of good deals on Sequoias if you keep looking. You may find one with about 70K less miles for about $5K more.
