Isle Royale- A short photo essay.

Thank you Aaron !

Ywen, mid to late August usually means fewer flying pests. Which for Isle Royale still means long sleeved clothing and bug repellant. :) It was not bad at all though.

how was the bug situation there? bad I assume? Man I've got the itch to go! Spent a week up in UP and the Kewwenaw last year around this time.. bug was bad everywhere EXCEPT for at the tip of the Keweenaw penninsula. We spent a couple of days at Copper Harbor and it was free of bugs!!!! I don't understand!

Being in Chicago, it's like the closest access to spectacular scenery.

We just returned from the UP's Kewee Penn. (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/65756-UP-Overland-2011?p=941639&posted=1 ). It was the worst of the last 5 years for bugs for us. Still beautiful as always though.

Stunning pics as always Joash. My Canon Powershot isn't cutting it anymore. I need to take better pics.

Joash

Absolutely LOVE this shot! The simplicity and vivid colours are amazing. ALL the pics are great. Thanks for sharing and enabling us to be virtual travellers.

Cheers!

You have to know when to go to UP and the South or north shore for that matter, the best time is after a couple of good hard freezes in the fall/late summer. The days will still get into the mid sixties, w/ a good cool chill at night. You won't spend all day sweating with the cool breezes in late summer early fall either and the bugs will be nill. Swimming would be another story, youre not going to be doing much swimming unless you are from the area, no matter what time of year up there the water is cold at best. Born, bred and will never leave the area( except for work)

Awesome photo series Joash. I'm thinking this is one of those threads that will be drooled over alot, but wont be added to all that much except for those few hardened explorers.

Like you stated, it's just not that accessible to be explored by most who long to. Thanks for sharing your experience!

The bugs were the worst this year (last week) in the 5 years we have been going out to the Keweenaw. They weren't bad the rest of the UP though. Superior wasn't too bad but not as nice as last year. I would still love to live up there.

Joash, thanks for sharing the link. I had looked in other parts of the forum for your account but not in this section, d'oh! Great write up and photos, stunning actually. I will add that yes the bugs can be bad, but depending on when you go they can be nonexistant too, like early May, August, September, Oct. Those are the best times to avoid them. I was there a couple of weeks ago and no bugs at all, perfect weather, and even good swimming. Here is the link to the report I am still putting together with my shots. Not nearly as captivating as Joash's, just taken with my iphone.

Its funny, we started out our reports with very similar descriptions, I think we might be on similar wave lengths or something, you poor guy! haha

Thanks Fred, and Kristian I think we're just afflicted with the same malady; but I definitely do not take my prescribed dose of the outdoors like you do. :)

It's a pleasant peninsula indeed, and how unlikely of all places to be so photogenic....out here in the midwest. I am continually surprised and inspired. Just looking through some photos from Munising last weekend, I think I'll start another thread, haha.

Thanks Trevor, IR is actually much closer to your neck of the woods- at least all the indigenous moose and wolf packs that swam over are canuck to the core.
