I expect the low range ratio will still be more than adequately slow for our needs, which includes little rock crawling. If not, we can install a set of the Marks low range gears from Australia.

I don't think you'll need the Marks gears. I'm on 35's, 4.11 and Marks 1.08 ratio gears. I'm 11% over on the speedometer with this combination. The Marks Gears -TC will more than likely be coming out of my rig because they are noisy. They are awsome for crawling but noisy on the highway.

Also, for reference my 60 is heavy (about 7,000 lbs loaded/fueled) with a 1hz-t'd & Maggiolina on top. I get 17mpg trying not to get tickets. I'm sure it would go up if I slowed a bit and lightened up.

More great information on the Marks Gears, thanks. That's not bad mileage for that heavy. You might do the most good lightening up unsprung weight - tires / wheels.

My setup is 4650 lbs with Columbus Carbon Fiber roof tent and 10 gallons of diesel (capacity = 40) but no gear. I keep my gear light, so I'm planning to not exceed 5000 not including driver / passenger (Jonathan and I add up to maybe 265). I still have stock bumpers, but want to put on a front guard soon.

Bob - As far as my knowledge goes, installing only the low-range gears would not have an effect on high-range noise - correct?

However, as you said, I don't think we'll need them.

Because of the offset front and rear outputs, the power flows through a set of gears in the Split-Case transfer case even when in high range, regardless of 2 or 4wd. If those gears aren't made to be low noise gears then you could have noise from the transfer case. It is far easier to cut a noisy set of gears than it is to cut a quiet set of gears.

Fantastic truck and amazing build. I can't wait to see how it continues to evolve! I'm very jealous...

There are major differences in the Marks Gears over the years, while many of their early sets did produce some gear noise and highway whine, their newer versions are noticeably quieter. The idler (secondary) setup now uses tapered roller bearings on a specially designed idler shaft rather than a standard idler shaft with roller bearings. If you do come across the need for gears, get ready for sticker shock, with the US dollar situation and a single US importer (Advance Adapters), they jumped in price nearly $1k in the last couple of years. So start saving or find an Aussie friend ;)

The 60 looks great Rosanne!

Thanks for all the information. Even though I've rebuilt or helped rebuild a dozen engines, the inside of a transmission and transfer case is still terra incognita to me.

what a neat build !!

if your interested in stock 60 3rds to rebuild i'm needing to replace my 4:10 3rds. or if ya just want to install 3:70 gears in yours i might be interested to take the 4:10's off your hands.

Interesting, as I have the tapered bearings in my TC. Heavier oil (90-120w) and some sound deadner on top of the TC/floor of the 60 have helped, but they are still loud - they compete with the tires and the exhaust at this point.

I'm sold. When I pick up my 60 this spring, I reckon I'll be doing a nice Diesel swap instead of buying a commuter car. :) :victory:

Update on fuel economy: We just refilled the tank, after about 300 miles of mixed in-town, two-lane highway, and dirt-road-to-our-house driving. This one worked out to 25.8 mpg.

Has anyone checked to see how much TLC would charge the rest of us to swap a
new 3.0L International diesel/new 5 speed trans/new radiator/new wiring into a
60 series Land Cruiser? $30,000? More?
